Great day at the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa with Madeleine of the YWCA and Sumona of Fetzer Vineyards! PackagingArts went out to show their support for the YWCA's efforts of spreading awareness and healing the effects of domestic violence.

1000 Stories Barrel Display

Fetzer Vineyards approached us with a concept: a wine for whiskey drinkers. The brand became the project of our partner company, Affinity Creative, from ideation, naming, back story to final product. The result was 1000 Stories, a revitalization of Old West values for 21st century America. Packagingarts extended that brand vision to the retail market with a spectacular barrel display. The detail-oriented barrels draw attention to the root of 1000 Stories: the barrels in which each batch of wine is aged to perfection. Each barrel features a unique wooden exterior to evoke the authenticity of the Old West.


Introducing The Gnarly Head Vine

GH Vine

Gnarly Head challenged Packagingarts to design and execute a realistic old vine for a flexible mass display. Using conventional materials to replicate the level of detail and complexity in a natural vine would be impossible. The piece's size was another problem: in its final form, the vine would be too large to ship.

The Packagingarts solution was a grapevine display crafted with a combination of new technology and old-fashioned artistry. The display was rendered using CAD drawings from a natural grapevine. With these renders, a mold was hand-tooled in clay. Each mold defined the level of detail in a natural vine. We used cast resin to show every nook and cranny. After casting, each vine was hand-rubbed and painted to create a natural patina in a four-stage process. The vine was designed to be broken down into four main parts to allow for easy assembly in market and minimal shipping costs.

The final product is an authentic and impressive in-store statement as bold as the brand itself. Resting on a wooden base with permanent branding, this vine can be plussed up with décor kits for seasonal holidays or stand alone as a strong branding statement and destination piece.

Johnnie Walker, the world’s top Scotch whisky brand, asked us to create a sleek display case reminiscent of the quintessential steamer trunk to accompany their global marketing campaign. Since 1819, Johnnie Walker has been committed to the art of excellence, transforming a once-local family product into a global commodity.
 
We’re honored to bring our artistic talents to this historical legacy. Johnnie continues to walk in the form of the Striding Man, featured front and center in crisp silver. Deep navy communicates businesslike integrity and highlights amber bottles bearing classic Johnnie Walker black and red logos. Metallic corner accents, tarnished clasps, and a leathery texture lend the perfect finishing touches to a practical, stunning display. Our streamlined trunk complements the classic“Keep Walking” slogan and the new“Joy Will Take You There”campaign, inviting drinkers to pick up the case and go on their merry way, enjoying the rewards of hard work with every step.

Packagingarts, 'Mare Island Business Pioneer’ Celebrates 20th Anniversary

If you recently heard the popping of champagne bottles coming from Mare Island, it was not the ghost of past shipyard christening ceremonies. 

October 2015 marked Mare Island’s Packagingarts’, 20th year in business. The company celebrated the event right where it has been located for the last 15 years—in a Commander’s Quarters on Historic Officer’s row. Over 200 clients, business partners and staff attended a laid-back and samba-inducing, tropical-themed party, “Welcome to The Island.” Highlights included music by The Harvest Band, catering from Alta Cuisine and mysteries from DANTE the magician. 

Dave Miller, principal and co-founder of Packagingarts, says their location on Mare Island has been an integral part of their success. It seems the same applies to their new affiliated company, Affinity Creative Group – doubling it’s business in two years located in another historic officer’s mansion on Walnut Avenue. The two firms employ approximately 25 employees.  

“We decided to hold our anniversary celebration right here at our headquarters on Mare Island because it has contributed significantly to our identity. The mansions and the island have a certain mystique and our clients love coming to the big beautiful homes we call our offices and studios,” Miller said. His business partner and President of Packagingarts, John Swain, remarked, “This location has become very important for us – not only for its unique history, but practically speaking, it is conveniently close to Napa, Sonoma and North Coast cities and towns, where many of our clients are located.”

Clos du Bois Chardonnay Display Bottle - Go Big or Go Home!

Clos du Bois was looking for a large presence in store that would help reinforce the launch of their new label and packaging that was hitting the shelves in March of 2015. They were also looking for a seasonal display vehicle that would have the ability to be dressed up with seasonal thematic objects.

 

This massive 6’ tall scale bottle of Clos du Bois Chardonnay captures the attention of consumers from across the store. With retailers trying to keep sight lines clear, this translucent bottle design is a realistic and exciting option to generate a mass display footprint from scratch or utilize as a supplemental piece to other programs. We kept the bottom open enough to add balloons or other optional creative devices to plus up for seasonal holidays. Made from direct printed vacuum formed PETG and litho printed labels, this bottle reflected the NEW look of Clos du Bois in a grand way.

 


A Smoking Hot Promotional Program

Not many things are more representative of Fall than changing colors and the smell of sweet BBQ smoke wafting through the air. With Fall just around the corner Don Sebastiani & Sons turned to Packagingarts to create a unique seasonal retail experience that stands out amongst the throngs of football displays and light-up gimmicks. 

 

After much thought, Packagingarts’ Creative Director Mark Ray turned his attention toward the theme of BBQ, specifically the smoker. The “Smoke Shack” (as we call it) promotional program is scalable from a single-case imitation smoker to a 66+ case smoke shack with case cards and brand collateral. Scalability is a key success factor of promotional displays. Packagingarts aims to design displays that aren’t only successful in large markets, but mom and pop shops as well. The effectiveness of a promotion is judged by its ability to entice the consumer in any environment no matter its’ size. The “Smoke Shack” perfectly represents scalability in market, and a successful program. 

 

The MENAGE A TROIS Balloon Display

There is a step change in wine and spirits retail in which consumers are gravitating to real and authentic brand experiences. The Balloon for Menage A TROIS is a great example of a realistic display element that can extend a brand beyond seasonal boundaries and offer the consumer a quality experience and connection to a brand. In this case, a woven basket, durable fabric, gold rope, and metal embellishments were introduced to provide an upscale and authentic hot air balloon.

This spectacular display is a collaboration between the Menage A TROIS internal design team and packagingarts design and manufacturing teams. Crafted with the highest quality materials and assembled with ease on floor, cases of wine then surrounded the balloon along with promotional banners and seasonal plus-up materials to create a 360-degree shopping experience. Perfect for high profile areas of any grocery store.

PA and Affinity Have Dinner at City Winery Napa

With America’s birthday already in the rear view mirror, we wanted to mark the mid-year point with a pause from the day-to-day and heed sage advice from a great leader:

 “Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” – Abraham Lincoln

The teams at Packagingarts and Affinity Creative Group capitalized on this idea by assembling for a one day workshop conducted by the energizing and inspiring coach and facilitator, Randy Roberts, known for her transformational work with high profile agencies including Apple, Genentech, Lucasfilm and NBC.

After a full day of insight and introspection we gathered together at City Winery in downtown Napa to enjoy some fantastic food, tasty libations and a continuation of our engaging discussion on how to be extraordinary—for our clients and ourselves.

It was a highly productive break and we all came away from the day recharged and re-energized. Now… back to work!

With Father’s Day just around the corner we find ourselves reflecting on the nostalgia of days gone by and the times we spent with our fathers. That experience is something familiar to many of us and with that commonality comes the potential for influential marketing and promotion. Which, for those of us in the promotional display industry, begs the question; how do we tap into that potential?

Affinity Creative Helps Flora Springs Unveil New Brand Identity and Packaging

Mare Island, California—With the help of Affinity Creative Group, Flora Springs Winery & Vineyard, one of Napa Valley’s premier family-owned estate wineries for over 35 years, has unveiled a new logo, labels and packaging designed to reflect a stronger brand identity and more clearly convey key messages about the Napa Valley estate’s core values. The new identity system is being introduced with the winery’s 2014 vintage white wines and 2013 vintage red wines as they are released throughout 2015.

“While critical elements of the original design have been retained, the new package tells the Flora Springs story in a clearer, more compelling way,” says Nat Komes, General Manager of Flora Springs.   “Through imagery and words we’re communicating what makes Flora Springs stand out among our Napa Valley peers -- the core values that have been important to our family since we established our winery estate in 1978.”

“Our packaging is a key vehicle for communicating with our customers, particularly outside of the winery,” commented Komes. “We know our labels need to work hard for us, and as innovators and brand builders we felt this was an ideal time to freshen them up.”

An Authentic Approach to POS

The recently launched Fetzer “Truck Display” is one of our most authentic and impressive pieces of work. The display mounts a totally hand-made, vintage, metal truck to an all-wood structure that stands 7 feet tall with 17” signage and comfortably displays up to 16 cases of wine. The display is branded with the Fetzer logo and the “Rebels Since 1968” tagline running up the post. The truck is separately branded and dismounts easily to become a unique desk display that looks great alone or loaded down with three bottles of wine.

Mare Island Businesses Open in Record Time Post Quake Thanks to City of Vallejo and Lennar Responsiveness and Partnership

Mare Island, CA, September 5, 2014—Long time Mare Island based business, PackagingArts and their newest venture, the one year old Affinity Creative Group, have been singing praises for The City of Vallejo Department of Building Inspections and Lennar Mare Island ever since a 6.0 earthquake rocked all of our worlds on Sunday morning, August 26th

Remarkably, the wine packaging, display and brand design companies were back up, operating and open for business in record time.  In this case, the very next day. 

Although PackagingArts lost three chimneys and both buildings endured significant loss of plaster, many large plaster cracks, in every room and on every wall of the 8500 sq. ft. mansion along with some broken glass, neither business suffered a prolonged shut-down thanks to the rapid response of Abel Bustamonte, the tireless deputy building inspector who was actually on-site on Mare Island early Sunday morning.  He was diligently reviewing degrees of damage done to the historical buildings on Walnut Avenue, also known as Officer’s Row.  Once occupied by the Base Commander, who was in charge of the now decommissioned naval shipyard, the stately mansions now house a range of businesses and offices, owned by the City of Vallejo and operated by Lennar Mare Island. 

Working in close partnership with Lennar Mare Island, which manages the proprieties for the City of Vallejo, Mr. Bustamonte was on the case early, as he knew the fate of some of the most crucial and thriving businesses hung in the balance. 

Dave Miller, Principal at PackagingArts and Affinity Creative, remarked, “On Sunday morning I drove over to the Island to inspect the damage at both of our buildings on Walnut Avenue. I was originally informed that all the mansions are to be red tagged.  Imagine my surprise when I met Mr. Bustamonte already there looking over the properties.  He was very reasonable, realistic and practical.  After inspecting each of our buildings he indicated that the damage incurred was not structural, except for the chimneys, which did not affect the integrity of the roof, and that we would be able to occupy the properties on Monday morning. He told me our two buildings would not be red tagged.  One would receive a yellow tag, the other a green tag.  You can imagine my relief, knowing that we would be able to carry on with business as usual with PackagingArts and Affinity Creative back up and running the day after quake for our wine clients, many who were more severely impacted.”

That said, there were still many repairs to be made, Brenda Sanders, Property Manager and Brian McDonough, Construction Manager at Lennar Mare Island went into action to ensure that repairs began as early as Tuesday morning, after damage assessments were made on Monday. By mid-week, the remaining damaged plaster was being removed and in some spots, new dry wall was already being installed.  Employees at PackagingArts and Affinity Creative were stunned by the rapid response of the Lennar Mare Island work crews.  Chris Lynch, office manager at Affinity Creative remarked, “The work team under Lennar’s direction is amazing—polite, expert and efficient.  Most of our damaged plaster is already gone and the new drywall is being installed in record time.  A remarkable effort.”

John Swain, President of PackagingArts and a Principal at Affinity Creative, who was traveling during the big shaker, commented upon his return to the area,  “Both PackagingArts and Affinity Creative are grateful in that our clients survived the quake and have been able to bounce back quickly.  And we are indeed fortunate that the damage incurred by our firms was quickly addressed by the City of Vallejo and has undergone immediate repairs by the professional contracting team assembled by Lennar Mare Island. We are very grateful and most appreciative of the stellar response by both parties.”  


Reprising POPAI 2013: Crafting a "Best in Show”

POPAI 2013 'Best of Show' - Don Sebastiani & Sons 'Fish Shack' Display

With the 2014 West Coast POP show just around the corner, we are taking a few moments to reflect on last year’s entries and our Best of Show wine display for Don Sebastiani and Sons. Crafted from reclaimed wood, our “Time with Dad Fish Shack” awed the judges winning not onlyBest of Show,but also Best Structural Designand Best Wine Display. Moreover, “Time with Dad” didn’t just win awards, it also performed well in stores helping Don & Sons sell over thousands of cases nationwide in 2013.

But you’re not reading this to hear us gloat. So, the important question is: what made “Time with Dad” such an effective in-store piece? 

The answer is simple, (in theory): Grasp the brand vision and create a retail experience that resonates with the target market. In this case, while most summer wine/spirit brands developed grilling promotions… we went fishing. That was the Don & Sons family spark of an idea, which we turned into a powerful promotional display at retail.  Our solution created a deeper emotional connection between Don  & Sons’ brands and their consumers at retail. This drove strong retail activation across several sections of their wine portfolio. Of course, this might sound simple, but it takes an incredibly knowledgeable, talented and experienced group of thinkers, designers and production professionals to make it happen.  Fortunately, we have such a team at PackagingArts.    

POPAI 2013 was a great show and the fish shack was an exciting piece; but now we now look forward to next month’s show.   • Participation in website development and launch process
  • Implementation of sound SEO practices to increase website traffic and new business inquiries

Approach and Solution

The SEQUIN brand launch was targeted to females, 28+ in spring of 2012 with the offer of a new ‘lightly sparkled’ category of wine. Packagingartswas asked to develop the promotional voice for the launch to include in-store collateral and a semi-permanent display holding four cases. As unique as the product and packaging, we were challenged to deliver thinking and in-store materials that would be as different and as beautiful as the product. We felt the sensibilities of the brand should be inspired by fashion with influences taken from cosmetics, handbags and RTW categories. Our display specifically is designed to connect with women. Its color is neutral, its design is contemporary with round shapes (to mimic bubbles) and most importantly, it creates the brand/product as hero!

Approach and Solution

This annual promotion provides a vessel to raise awareness for prevention and education of breast cancer. This event coincides with the kick-off of the Fall football season, thus the theme "through the uprights" to deliver this message. With a color story of pink, this display is designed for immediate visual impact. Packagingartscreated and manufactured the promotion. Added to the promotion were case cards, wine offers and an online and mobile connection to Sutter Home.

CASE STUDY: DON SEBASTIANI & SONS TIME WITH DAD FISH SHACK

Project: 2013 Spring/Summer Promotion and Mass Display
Client: Don Sebastiani & Sons

Approach and Solution
The Don and Sons family is much like the wines they represent; big, bold and authentic. When most summer wine/spirits promotions develop grilling promotions…we go fishing. By design, our objective is to own the seafood category for wine placement in mass/grocery and chain stores. 

Packagingarts goal was to create an authentic experience using weathered, reclaimed wood for the shack structure and applied illustrated panels to deliver a'Fish Shack' story. The Packagingartscreative team designed and illustrated all graphics. Added in-market were plus-up kits of crates (holding wine), nets, buoys, oars and old fishing poles supplied in market to finish the merchandising story.

Project: 2013 Bota Box Earth Day experience (mass display/promotional experience)
Client: Delicato Family Vineyards

Approach and Solution
The commitment to a sustainable environment has always been an ethos of Bota Box wines. In that spirit, Bota Box has created an initiative in support of Earth Day as a way to connect and partner with the consumers to plant trees across America. 

The Packagingartsobjective was to a create, develop and deliver a promotional voice and point-of-sale materials that would convey a sustainable experience for the consumer with primary placement in mass/grocery and chain stores. Our primary goal was to connect emotionally and inspire consumers to help in the planting of trees and contributing to the environment…one tree at a time. Secondly, to extend the brand and its positioning in support of this worthy cause.


YWCA Fundraiser - Women, Wine & Cheese

Every year PackagingArts donates creative services to the YWCA of Sonoma County for their fundraiser for battered women and children called Women Wine & Cheese.

As an affiliate of an international membership organization, the YWCA Sonoma County has devoted the past 30 years to empowering women and affirming the worth of all people, regardless of gender, race, religion, sexual orientation or ability.

The mission of the YWCA:

The ywca is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.

At the heart of the YWCA’s programs are our domestic violence services. We provide a wide range of services to those who have been impacted by domestic violence so they can heal, become self-sufficient, and return productively to the community.

packagingarts continues an annual tradition by winning three top awards in the prestigious SF POP Show!  Held every year in San Francisco, CA to honor the marketing industries most creative and functional retail displays, the show highlights top work across multiple consumer product industries.  This year, packagingarts brought home two first place awards as well as a third place out of hundreds of excellent displays!

Counter Top Displays Permanent - "Etude Pinot Experience"  - A Pinot Primer/Educational display program:

This premium table top educational piece was designed and engineered to be a reusable, interactive display to be used for both wine education as well as on premise wait staff education. Featuring a secure iPad window and soil display to help bring home the entire Etude story and experience. The display included a custom padded travel case suitable for airline travel to ensure multiple uses.

Wine Displays – Non Permanent  -  Sutter Home Spring Gate Display Program:

What mass display is a better expression of the brand than a well executed, white painted wooden gate for the consumer to come home to? Authentic and clean, this program was a spring sensation and had added flexibility with a removable sign and accompanying promotional materials to signal the onset of the season.

Wine Displays – Non Permanent – Sutter Home Holiday Mass Display

Talk about Holiday appropriate!  Consumers felt right at home and wanted to open the door and walk right into this holiday display! A mass display sensation in retail, this piece was executed with a combination of MDF painted wood columns and decorated corrugated roof with snowflakes to help bring in the cheer!
