About Polarclad

PolarClad Tank Insulation is the industry's most sophisticated and leading tank insulation system which delivers up to 96.5% reduction in power usage. Our clients have experienced savings of multi-millions of dollars due to reduction in storage costs. The unique insulation system is so efficient that it can pay for itself in as little as one and a half years.

Wine producers in hot climates like California's heavily rely on tank refrigeration to ensure the quality of their wines. In fact, wineries spend on average 60% of their energy bills on refrigeration alone. In today's world, energy is an ever more precious commodity and energy prices have soared in recent years. Thanks to PolarClad, hundreds of wineries in Australia and California have protected both wine quality and competitive pricing by combining temperature control with reduced energy costs.

PolarClad not only provides great esthetic enhancement for storage tanks, it is also easily maintained, makes techniques such as cold stabilization much easier, and is a highly positive environmental measure. In 2008 alone, PolarClad Tank Insulation saved over five million kWh in energy. This equates to a money savings of $718,170 for our clients and is enough energy to power 770 Californian homes for one year.

The Wine Industry's Most Sophisticated Tank Insulation System

What is PolarClad?

PolarClad Tank Insulation is a thermal barrier of external panels consisting of a three inch thick sheet of rigid polystyrene foam with a durable skin of aluminum or stainless steel. The aluminum skin is available in four different colors. The unique measuring system and workshop conversion technique employed by PolarClad's skilled technicians enable the pre-cutting and pre-shaping of panels to the precise shape and curvature of every individual tank. All of our materials are locally sourced and pre-fabricated in California, not brought in from other countries.

Polarclad Tank Insulation provides:

  • Tanks insulated to R-12 Thermal Barrier rating with prefabricated panels 3 polystyrene adhered with double sided tape to aluminum sheets.
  • Shield that reflects and dissipates ambient heat.
  • Can deliver up to 95.6% reduction in ambient thermal energy.
  • Insulation controls temperatures.
  • Significantly reduces cold stability costs especially when used with our Vinfoil tank agitators.
  • Significantly reduces storage costs.
  • Protects juice, wine and concentrate quality.
  • Hardened NON POROUS exterior finish resistant to weather, is wash-down capable.
  • Hardened NON POROUS exterior is extremely pest and mold resistant.
  • All horizontal seams are overlapped and sealed.
  • All vertical and radial seams are overlapped, sealed and riveted.
  • Top and bottom edges of PolarClad insulation panels are reinforced with 1 X 1 X 1/8 aluminum angle rolled to radius.
  • Cut outs for valves, pipes, etc., are neatly flashed with same materials used for the horizontal panels.
  • Aluminum skin colors available are Polar WhiteNew LinenSandstoneClear Anodized and can provide stainless steel cladding.
  • A stable internal tank wine temperature
  • A shield that reflects and dissipates ambient heat
  • 96.5% reduction of ambient thermal energy
  • A R-12 Thermal Barrier
  • A shell resistant to weather, birds and pests

Each set of panels is quickly assembled on site to the exact form-fitting body suit for each tank. Panels are then joined together by rivets. Our installation crew is trained to work around the most challenging set-ups such as multiple pipes or tanks in close proximity to other tanks and walls. The entire installation process is very clean and quick and has such negligible impact on winery operations that some wineries have even chosen to install PolarClad during harvest and crush.

Vinfoil Demonstrates Mixing Efficiency
10 August, 2017

Gentle and extremely efficient mixing of wine in all applications, blending, cold stabilization, additions, and lees suspension are just a few processes that are improved with proper mixing. Faster blend times and faster cold stabilization result in greater product consistency and optimal use of tanks.

The design of Vinfoil Mixer impeller blades maximizes flow and minimizes turbulence while ensuring a uniform distribution of solids. The Vinfoil Mixer can achieve cold stabilization three times faster than the pump method with an average energy savings of 80%.

Below is a video of a demonstration the the Unified Wine & Grape Symposium showing not only that the Vinfoil (on the left) more quickly creates an even distribution of the purple color, but also that it doesn’t have the dead zones of the pump operated tank (on the right).

Agitation Technology in Motion
01 August, 2014

The degree of agitation depends on the objectives and the nature of the product. For wine industry selections we are conscious of creating the appropriate level of agitation to get the job done yet being mindful of how sensitive the product can be to harsh treatment.

The equation below is how we determine the flow being created:

Q = Nq N D3 n

  • Q = Primary Pumping Capacity (m3/min)
  • Nq = Pumping Number (dimensionless)
  • N = Shaft Speed (rpm)
  • D = Impeller Diameter (m)
  • n = Number of impellers

Different technologies have different geometries which in turn determines the Nq and Np that characterises their device.

Practical applicatons for the Wine Industry

  • Cold Stabilisation
  • Oak Extraction
  • Additive blending
  • Uniformity of suspended solids as feed for downstream devices

VINFOIL Technology is currently performing all these tasks and more and is making change to the US wine sector.

VINFOIL Mixer - PolarClad introduces Australia’s leading wine mixing technology to the American market.

Vinfoil Mixer

The VINFOIL Mixer sets the standard for efficiency in cold stabilization and mixing for large volume tanks. With the VINFOIL Mixer cold stabilization is achieved three times faster than the pump method with a total average energy savings of over 80%.

The Hydrofoil Impeller Makes the Difference

The VINFOIL Mixer’s impeller is engineered to maximize flow and minimize turbulence. The impeller blades are slim at the tip, where the speed is highest, and wide at the base where speed is lowest, allowing all available energy to be transferred into a pure axial flow pattern in the tank. The twist in the blades is computer proportioned to eliminate turbulence.

  • Uniform distribution of solids in centrifuge and or decanter feed tanks
  • Dramatic reduction of cold stabilization time
  • Tank sur lees fermentation and post fermentation sur lees contact
  • Increased in-tank oak extraction
  • Pre-bottling tank blends:
Agitation for high proof blends. (Explosion Proof Environment)
  • Pre-coat filter press tanks and/or retrofit for existing units

Energy Savings

PolarClad Tank Insulations provides:

  • 19.4 kWh annual energy savings per square foot for outside tanks
  • 15.1 kWh annual energy savings per square foot for inside tanks

An example for energy savings would be:

A winery has eight 50,000 gallon outdoor tanks - equal to a combined surface area of 14,343 square feet. The 96.5% efficient Polarclad® Tank Insulation system will in this case save over 278,249 kWh. At $0.14/kWh, the winery will save $38,955 annually on their utility bill. The likelihood of power costs rising in the future is highly probable, so payback would be achieved even sooner.

Here are a few wineries who used PolarClad Tank Insulation to save energy and boost profitability:

Robert Mondavi Winery

Robert Mondavi Winery has 75 PolarClad® System insulated tanks that have saved the company 1,356,000 kWh in energy and have reduced their energy bill by an average of $38,000 annually.

LangeTwins Family Winery & Vineyards

LangeTwins insulated 48 wine tanks with PolarClad Tank Insulation, which has reduced energy use by 1,883,786 kWh for a total savings of $263,730.

Stuhlmuller Vineyards

Stuhlmuller Vineyards' installation of the PolarClad® System tank insulation saves the winery over $6,000 per year due to the enormous reduction in energy use.

Sonoma Wine Co.

Sonoma Wine Co. has introduced tank insulation as part of their environmental sustainability efforts through PG&E's Savings by Design Program. Tank insulation saves Sonoma Wine Co. $115,846 per year and has reduced their energy use by 2,695,612 kWh.

How long will it take to install PolarClad?

It depends on the tank volume. For example: Up to three 10,000 gallon tanks can be clad per day. For 60,000 gallon tanks, it usually takes one day to clad each tank.

What maintenance is required after installation?

The cladding is virtually maintenance free once installed. We normally recommend washing the cladding with soapy water every 6 months to prevent build up of weathering effects such as mold or staining.  The caulking should also be checked for shrinking every three months.

Of course, running into the tank with a forklift may necessitate some further maintenance...

What is the expected life span of Polarclad Tank Insulation?

With correct maintenance, indefinite. We believe the cladding can last as long as the tank itself. Because this technology is relatively young, hard data regarding longevity is limited. We do, however, know that the earliest installations from 1984 are still going strong today.

Will the installations interfere with my current operations?

Installation will not interfere with your current operations. In fact, we have often installed cladding during wineries busiest times such as harvest. The installations are performed with minimal disruption.

PolarClad Tank Insulation customers not only rave about energy cost savings but also about PolarClad's surprising ability to help them better control the winemaking process. Here what the experts say:

Gary Midyette, Director of Operations - Robert Mondavi Winery

"Our Winemaking Team has been very satisfied with the installation and performance of the PolarClad Tank Insulation. The installation on all of our tanks, ranging in size from 1,000 to 12,000 gallons, was excellent and is holding up well in the harsh environment of our outside Cellar."

"The insulation on the tanks allows us to quickly chill and easily maintain the optimum wine temperature in any weather. Due to the fact that we insulated approximately 20% of our outside tanks each year, over the past five years we have experienced a noticeable reduction in our PG&E bill for the same time period."

"Having our tanks insulated with PolarClad Tank Insulation is also allowing us to operate our glycol cooling system today at less than 50% of its capacity. With the system running less, we have a noticeable reduction in wear and tear on the equipment, allowing us to extend the intervals between scheduled maintenance. The life expectancy of our glycol system’s compressors has increased to a point where we are able to delay replacement projects by years."

"My only regret is that I did not install PolarClad Tank Insulation to all of our tanks sooner."

Leo Hansen, Winemaker – Stuhlmuller Vineyards

“From a winemaking perspective, it has been great to have our tanks insulated with PolarClad Tank Insulation. I didn’t realize how much I had been relying on my glycol heater to control the temperature of my tanks. Once I figured out how much the insulation stabilized the temperature inside the tanks, it was easy.  Now I don’t necessarily use the glycol heater anymore. We are in the process of adding more tanks, and the expansion will be more than covered with our current refrigeration unit.”

“After three years of using and bumping into our tanks, they still look really good. They are easy to sanitize – a bucket of water and a brush, and they’re clean."

Dave Rosenthal, General Manager and Director of Winemaking – Yokayo Wine Company

"The kind of operation we have here requires storing some wine in outside tanks through the hot summer months, and I have to have them insulated. With August temperatures frequently in the 100s, the tops of our tanks would really overheat, not only from ambient temperatures, but from the sun’s direct rays as well."

“The insulated tanks look very nice, almost like stainless steel. Anodized aluminum was the obvious pick as the color looks natural, much like our other tanks, and it is a pretty close match to our aluminum catwalks.”
“Everything worked out really well with PolarClad. The crews did a good job keeping the area neat, which was a tough job. If I had any questions, the lead guy was always happy to talk to me and we would go over it with the crew. There is no question I would use PolarClad Tank Insulation again."

Adam Mettler, Winemaker – Michael-David Family of Wines

"By installing PolarClad Tank Insulation we have benefited in multiple ways. The most important benefits have been temperature control and the gain in chiller capacity. The heat generated from fermentation disappears much slower in tanks with the insulation. This has improved our speed of malolactic fermentations immensely. In the warm time of year the tanks are easier to cool and keep a more even temperature within the tank due to the reduction of direct sunlight. Cold stabilization is much easier. Not only does the system have to work less, but the tank can drop down to a lower temperature faster than tanks without the insulation. Another big factor is that the efficiency of the insulation took a huge demand off our chillers allowing us to further expand without again upgrading our chilling tonnage. For a company growing as fast as us, benefits like this are important."

"In a time where everyone is trying to get greener and cut back on their energy needs, the reduction of energy use is important. The aluminum shell is easy to clean and the insulation can’t be damaged by birds or other environmental elements."

"The PolarClad team never gave me any reason to be unhappy, and the managers are very personable and easy to work with. They have been onsite multiple times and have never been hard to reach when needed. The installation team was friendly and always finished ahead of schedule. Any changes in plans or concerns along the way, they were happy to resolve. My first project with PolarClad Tank Insulation was for roughly 13 tanks, the second for 30 and a current project this December 2008 for 31 tanks. Year after year, we are continuing to use PolarClad as our tank insulation company and I would recommend them to any winery."

John Pritchard, Director of Operations – Simi Winery

"Wine tank insulation from PolarClad is always a thing of beauty.  Their workmanship is beyond the ordinary and more toward the extraordinary.  Every tank we had insulated from PolarClad has been done with extreme care and their craftsmanship is excellent.  We had several tanks done in stainless steel so that they wouldn't stick out from our other tanks.  They look exactly like our other stainless steel tanks."

"Wine tank insulation is great if you are going to use your tanks for cold stabilization or for long periods of time where you need to keep the tank cold. When we cold soak red fermenters our temperatures stay consistent and we save enormous amounts of energy from heat loss. We also insulated a tank where we need to keep the tank warm for long periods of time."

"Working with the PolarClad team has been a dream. They listen extremely well and take all our concerns to heart.  They work around our schedule.  The quality of their installations is extremely good.  When they finish a job they have us go over the installation and make sure it is satisfactory to our needs before they leave the job site.

I would recommend PolarClad Tank Insulation to any winery that is in need of insulating their tanks. Their employees are friendly and very courteous."

Randy Meyer, Winemaker and Corporate Wine Business Analyst – F.Korbel & Bros., Inc.

"The PolarClad product is certainly a more environmentally conscious approach to tank insulation compared to traditional Spray-On applications.  Also, the aluminum covering provides years of maintenance free benefits."

“Our experience with the PolarClad team has been very positive.  For that reason, we will continue our relationship on future projects."

Randall Lange, Principal and Co-Founder - LangeTwins Family Winery & Vineyards

"LangeTwins is always looking for ways to reduce the amount of energy required to operate the winery. One step to do this is insulating the outdoor tanks. Obvious benefits for insulating our outdoor tanks are the energy savings produced by reducing temperature loss while cooling stored wine."

"The kWh savings per year are impressive and depending on the electrical rate at the time, the energy cost savings are quite good. Also, we selected a neutral off white/beige color which actually blends in with the rural landscape, muting the amount of stainless reflections. We considered other insulating opportunities but the choice of PolarClad Tank Insulation was made because of the appearance of the product. It can be repaired and cleaned easily."

"We found the installation crew to be professional and responsive to our schedules. The sales manager was very professional and a pleasure to work with during the entire project timeframe. I would not hesitate to continue to ask for insulation installation from PolarClad."

Brian J. Hemphill, Director of Operations - Clos du Bois Winery

“Adequate tank insulation reduces the heat load on our refrigeration system, reduces the fluctuations in wine temperature, and allows us to keep bottle ready wines at their proper temperature.”

“We have used PolarClad Tank Insulation on indoor and outdoor tanks.  The smooth clad surface and rigid texture allows for easy cleaning and makes the outdoor tanks resistant to damage from birds and other pests.”

“The PolarClad team has stood behind its work and has worked with our team to find solutions to challenging installations.  We have over 25 tanks insulated with PolarClad and we plan to do more."
