Spectrophotometer Technology Readies Wine Industry for 2017 Harvest

Randox Food Diagnostics, a leading provider of clinical diagnostic services developed for the wine industry, has created a unique product to simplify the wine analysis process for winemakers looking ahead to the 2017 harvest and beyond.

The RX Altona works by utilizing Spectrophotometer technology, which measures the absorption of light in a solution in order to determine the concentration of a compound.

This semi-automated analyzer is credited with providing winemakers and lab technicians with increased versatility, flexibility, and reliable results in a matter of minutes through what’s known as an open-channel system.

“Each test is pre-uploaded into the machine so winemakers simply have to mix their reagents, select their test, and press run,” explains Krista Kelly, Randox Diagnostic’s Key U.S. Account Manager. “New tests can be added via a USB import through the RX Altona’s open channels, which means that users can load tests onto the machine outside those which we have pre-programmed. This allows winemakers maximum benefit from the flexibility of the analyzer.”

Kelly notes that the RX Altona features an extended range of wavelengths, between 340 nm and 700 nm. There’s also the option of an additional wavelength of 280 nm to increase wine analysis capacity.

“The wavelengths are set up to cover the most sought after tests in the industry including acetic acid, malic acid, glucose/fructose and NOPA,” Kelly confirms. “With the RX Altona we added the additional 280nm to include the option of testing wine color after receiving feedback from our customers.”

Kelly asserts that the RX Altona was developed with the end user in mind.

“We simplified the process with modern technology such as the seven inch touch screen,” Kelly points out. “While running through a test, the RX Altona provides on-screen prompts to walk a user through each step. It also stops you from moving to the next step if there is an issue, saving time on incorrect results.”

Randox Food Diagnostics Offers Wine Producers Accuracy in Tartaric Acid Detection

Randox Food Diagnostics has launched a new analysis kit to detect the levels of Tartaric Acid in wine. This kit has been developed to provide superior levels of accuracy and will aid in the assessment of wine quality worldwide.

Unlike most other fruit, grapes contain high levels of Tartaric Acid which gives wine its distinct flavour. Tartaric Acid is a naturally occurring acid found within the flesh of grapes and is one of the most prevalent organic acids, along with L-Malic acid, present in wine. The concentration which is present within the wine has a key role in its acidity and has a profound effect on characteristics such as odour, colour and flavour.

This acid also plays an important role in preservation, as the Tartaric Acid lowers the pH which denatures undesirable bacteria within the wine.  The determination of tartaric acid is also of interest in stability studies, since it forms complexes with potassium and calcium and the resulting precipitate causes undesirable deposits in the bottle. Tartaric deficiency can lead to multiple problems with the taste and colour of a wine.

RX altona Made for the Winemaker of Today and the Future

The new RX altona was built to fit the needs of winemakers in small to medium sized wineries. “After speaking to many of them we took into consideration the complete process, identified their individual and common needs, and created a semi-automated analyser that is extremely easy to use and highly accurate,” says Krista Kelly, Randox Food Diagnostics.

One of the main challenges that winemakers identified was the time it took to get results from outsourced laboratories. “Obviously, the longer the winemaker has to wait for results, the more likely it is to affect the quality of the wine,” Kelly explains. “With this in mind, the RX altona was designed to be firstly, as easy as possible to use, and secondly, to produce results quickly.”

The RX altona is capable of analysing wine samples throughout the winemaking process, specifically to give quantifiable results for acids, sugars and sulphurs, to name a few. And results are generated in as quickly as 8 minutes for some tests. “Getting results in real time means winemakers can make fast decisions, to protect their quality,” says Kelly.

The RX altona packs game changing and forward thinking features including; an extended range of wavelengths and the open channels. The analyser comes with wavelengths between 340nm and 700nm and also the option for an additional wavelength of 280nm which allows for color analysis.

Randox Food Diagnostics recently added a Glycerol testing kit to the growing range of products they offer wine producers. Citric and Tartaric Acid kits are slated for release in August, with Sucrose tests to follow in the fourth quarter.

“One of the biggest concerns for wine makers globally is quality,” says Janine McMullan, Business Manager at Randox Food Diagnostics’s Wine Division. “These new tests will allow winemakers to have a complete profile of the wine they are bottling.”

Randox has 30 years of experience developing diagnostic test kits for industries all over the world. They use the same strict quality control protocols for their food and wine diagnostic tests as they use for their clinical products.

Randox Food Diagnostics celebrating accreditation from prestigious Bordeaux wine institute

Randox Food Diagnostics is celebrating a key validation of its technology by a leading institute in the wine industry. Situated in the heart of one of the world's most prestigious wine-producing regions, the Institute of Vine and Wine Sciences at the University of Bordeaux is a multidisciplinary centre of research, learning and development for the industry.

Randox Food Diagnostics RX Monza and enzymatic testing kits were compared with the traditional methods of wine analysis and results provided by an accredited external testing laboratory using reference methods.

Results of three routine analysis parameters -Glucose/Fructose, Malic acid, and Acetic acid were compared. The tests were carried out across a range of 20 wines, covering a spectrum of vintages, varietals, appellations and concentrations.

The results of the study proved that Randox Food Diagnostics technology shows a strong correlation to the laboratory reference method allowing for ‘reliable and fair analysis’. It also demonstrated that Randox enzymatic kits consistently outperformed the traditional methods of wine testing for both reliability and regularity.

Wineries accelerate results as RX Monaco gets green light

As harvest approaches wineries keen to add capacity to analysis and quality control systems have a brand new option, with Randox Food Diagnostics RX Monaco analyser now validated for use on wine.

 

With Randox Food Diagnostics’ semi-automated analyser, the RX Monza, widely used throughout the industry, the Northern Ireland headquartered firm recognised medium-to-large producers could benefit from a quicker turn-around and economies of scale offered by a fully-automated system. As a supplier of a full range of analysers within the RX series, Randox Food Diagnostics identified the Monaco as a cost-effective solution with a throughput appropriate to a broad spectrum of wineries needs.

 

A key benefit is producers can test for the full range of parameters including malic acid, glucose/fructose and ethanol from a single sample, increasing efficiency and cutting the cost per test.

With direct application, no sample preparation requirements mean the system reduces time and labour costs, bringing the overall cost per test down to circa €0.35 as well as producing a result every few seconds. High demand is anticipated from wineries in remote locations currently sending results off-site to central laboratories experiencing several days turnaround. With the August grape harvest just weeks away, growers concerned about unpredictable seasons will be able to form a more complete picture of Nitrogen levels using a new test on the market.

Nitrogen is the limiting element in the growth of yeast cells, if there is sufficient amount of nitrogen fermentation goes quickly with fewer problems.  Nitrogen comes in two main sources for the yeast cells: ammonia and primary amino acids.  Low levels of Yeast Available Nitrogen (YAN) have been identified as the main cause of stuck fermentations and can lead to the generation of unwanted sulphides.  Conversely high levels of YAN can be a potential carcinogen in the presence of ethanol, particularly where the starting levels of L-arginine in the juice are high. 

Randox Food Diagnostics Global Business Manager David Ferguson said, “With regulatory bodies including EU controlling the levels of added Nitrogen, we know growers value cost-effective and accurate results measuring Nitrogen in must. The quality of the NOPA test means growers can detect levels of primary amino nitrogen present throughout the entire fermentation process.  Having one of the widest ranges on the market the NOPA assay has a minimum detectable concentration of 5.1mgN/L and is linear up to a concentration of 500mgN/L, allowing wineries to get a quick, reliable and accurate result of the primary amino nitrogen status within just 7 minutes.  At Randox Food Diagnostics, we are always focussed on adding new assays to our growing product base and are confident demand will be strong, particularly where the growing season has been unpredictable.

Total Sulphite in wine

During wine making sulphur is used as an essential additive as it plays two important roles as an anti-oxidant (prevents enzymatic browning) and anti-microbial (protects against wine spoilage) preservative in its free form. It can have an inhibitory effect on all yeast strains especially ‘wild’ strains as well as effecting malolactic fermentation by MLF bacteria in high doses.  

Due to SO2 becoming inactive when it binds with colour pigments of wine and the increased awareness of the effects of sulphites together with the prevalence of sulphite intolerance in some individuals, it has become valuable for wine makers to measure both the free and total SO2.  For these reasons, legal limits have been set for maximum permitted levels of SO2 in wines.   See table below:

Naturally occurring levels of SO2 in wines are usually found around 10-20mg/L.  All wines containing sulphites greater than 10mg/L must have a statement added to the label making the consumer aware that sulphite in present.

The epic harvest of 2012 requires top-notch analysis to develop high quality, vintage wines – and Randox Food Diagnostics has perfected a state of the art, fully automated and cost-effective wine testing system ideally suited to the task.

Developed for medium to large-sized wineries, the RX Monaco system can perform up to 170 analyses per hour with results beginning in less than 13 minutes. The Monaco test menu includes: acetic acid, copper, ammonia, ethanol, glucose/fructose, iron, lactic acid, malic acid, potassium, total antioxidant status (TAS) and total SO2. Available this June will be Citric Acid and NOPA.

Featuring easy-to-use Windows-based software, Monaco’s ground-breaking, remote access diagnostics allow for immediate support to existing systems, reducing downtime and the expense associated with timely call outs. Technical support is available 24/7 to any location around the globe.

The Monaco system features 120 reusable optical plastic cuvettes, which are automatically washed through 12-step cleaning program to minimize contamination and reduce consumable costs. In addition, cooled reagent and sample carousels ensure that reagent controls and calibrators can be stored on board the analyzer for ease of inventory management without compromising stability.

The RX Monaco is an efficient, cost-effective upgrade to a fully automated analyzer that can be easily integrated into any winery setting, with options for both floor standing and bench top units to maximize space.

Cost effective and reliable analysis of beverage antioxidant activity

Antioxidants present in red wine, tea, fruit juices and other beverages are known to give cardio-protective effect. The Randox Food Diagnostics Total Antioxidant Status (TAS) kit provides beverage companies with a useful tool to evaluate the phenolic content of their products by measurement of its antioxidant activity.   The variation in phenolic composition is thought to account for the flavour, taste, colour and odour of different beverages.

 

Research shows levels of TAS are heavily present in red wine followed by tea, whilst other beverages indicating significant levels of antioxidants include cranberry juice, apple juice and coffee.

 

The Total Antioxidant Status (TAS) kit from Randox Food Diagnostics is suitable for both manual and automated analysers and offers a cost effective and quantitative assessment of a beverage’s phenolic content by way of antioxidant activity.

It is vitally important to obtain accurate ethanol measurements as all grades and qualities of most beers and wines are based primarily on the alcohol content. Common alternative methods include gas chromatography which is laborious, expensive and requires experienced staff to perform the test. The new Randox Food Diagnostics ethanol assay incorporates a rapid enzymatic based method of detection which is highly specific yet straightforward. The kit will provide considerable time saving benefits with results obtained in seven minutes with minimal training required. Optimised to run on the RX monza analyser the ethanol kit provides highly accurate results with reduced cost per test.

Wine analysis with the RX altona

The RX altona brings the most modern analysis technology to wineries and wine laboratories worldwide. Available with a choice of two detection systems (280nm and halogen), users are offered an extensive testing range with wavelengths between 280nm and 700nm. Accuracy with the flexibility of increased wavelengths, open channels and the ability to favourite and upload new parameters via USB, means the RX altona is the most versatile and easy to use wine analyser on the market. With a new smart monitoring system the RX altona automatically detects potential analysis problems and reports them to the user. Total Antioxidant Status (TAS) Kit

Antioxidants present in red wine, tea and other beverages have been shown to give a cardio-protective effect. The compounds in beverages which contribute to this effect are Phenolics, of which Polymeric Phenols are the largest subgroup. Phenolics in beverages undergo many chemical reactions during processing and storage and the variation in phenolic composition is thought to account for the characteristic flavour, taste, colour, odour and quality of different beverages.
