About Us

Last year, the machines enrolled in our maintenance program produced with 98.1% production utility. So far, 2018 numbers are 98.9%. Our proprietary process learns and adjusts over time. As our empirical data improves, so does our ability to identify your production risk.

WE ARE AVAILABLE FOR EMERGENCY SERVICE FOR ALL TYPES OF PRODUCTION EQUIPMENT AND PACKAGING EQUIPMENT.

WSC was established in 2005 in hopes of increasing the preparedness of wineries for production. Since then, an infrastructure has been created which includes a detailed preventative maintenance program. The program is the best way for a winery to arm itself with the information necessary to make the right decisions with enough time to react.

WSC's proprietary software allows us to be very efficient in all aspects of the process and has led to our success. Through the program, production managers now have the ability to prepare and protect production more thuroughly and more timely than ever before. The program term is 12 months and enrollment is on or before January 1st.

Tradition vs technology

It is not suprising how many equipment failures there are during harvest because the wine industry is really hard on equipment.

It is suprising that many of us wait until late in the season before considering their equipment performance and reliability levels.

We understand that this is a traditional industry... but there is a better way.

Lets use our time!

WSC and its network, Who We Are

The network of the Winery Service Connection includes local production equipment retailers.

The Equipment Management program has allowed WSC the flexibility to offload local retailers in technical service calls during the high service season.

Many of the existing local retailers have referred and continue to refer WSC as a service provider.

WSC as a positive relationship with all of the retailers in the area.

WSC's availability during harvest has helped to strengthen the relationships within the WSC network.

A solution which allows the winemaker to focus on the vineyard, logistics and winemaking!

Give us a call at 707 849-2526 to learn how we can take the stress out of your production process today!

Services

The premier service offered by WSC is Equipment Management.

This is a fresh concept which encompases everything we believe the wine industry needs to prepare for harvest. Efficiency and value are maximized through this program. Over 90% of the customers whom have tried Equipment Management have returned. Many benefits are reserved only for Equipment Management Customers as opposed to calling for service at a moments notice.

WSC also offers service "at a moment's notice".

Equipment Management (EM)
The alternative to "press checks".
This is a comprehensive program which has detailed activities specified through each quarter of the calendar year. In most cases, enrollment price is less than that of a press check. WSC offers this program for about 90% of the equipment on the pad and in the cellar.

Get the information you want but was never available to you in a format that makes it easy to understand.

One source, one program, one solution for all of your production equipment service needs = efficiency.

Step 1: Motivation

Most power transmission failures begin with too much grease in the bearing. A grease gun is a hydraulic device; it will easily push a bearing seal out of the bearing. Thats what happens! In most cases, grease gunners are looking for a visual confirmation that grease is coming out of the bearing. If that happens, your seal has been pushed out of place, contaminants can enter and your bearing life has been compromised.

Systems to Keep Your Machinery Running
05 November, 2018

Imagine a best-case scenario for your winery; all of your machinery is cared for, runs well, gets diagnostics run and repairs before they are needed, and then runs smoothly during harvest. Yes, runs smoothly during harvest. Using proprietary software developed by owner, Dave Peritore, this scenario can be a reality, as offered by Winery Service Connection. A common scenario that Dave would like to move the industry away from looks more like this: Last harvest you limped along with an aging press, crusher/de-stemmer or pump, put it away after harvest and forgot that it wasn’t working well. Now this harvest is upon you, and it doesn’t work at all. All the grapes are coming in and the technician you called says he’ll be out…in three days.

Machinery is expensive, whether new or used. Just like keeping a car in good condition by changing the belts, getting oil changes, checking brake pads, etcetera, your machinery is a long-term investment and should be maintained in the same manner. “We have invented proprietary tools, software, and systems in order to capture preventative maintenance. This has been developed specifically for the wine industry.” says owner Dave Peritore. “It has been ten years of evolution and creation. It’s all custom. Thanks to our WSC customers, we have developed what the industry wants.”

Joseph Phelps’ winery offers authentication, “Winery Service Connection has been vital in how we maintain and operate our winery equipment. The service they provide allows us easy access to pictures of our equipment with suggested repairs. The server website they maintain allows us to easily approve repair tasks with photos showing the part or items that need to be maintained. I feel Winery Service Connection provides a service that is superior to other equipment maintenance companies. They provide detailed reports on all the equipment you enroll in their program, with suggested frequency of lubrication of moving parts on crush equipment. They schedule repair work well in advance so as to have all equipment repairs done before the start of the wine harvest. They have friendly and knowledgeable staff that are available for emergency break downs. Since our enrollment of our crush equipment in the Winery Services Connection program we have seen a significant drop in breakdowns.”

For the 2017 harvest, Winery Service Connection had a performance rate of 98.8% with current clients, with a response rate of under 30 minutes, and under three hours for repair times, as long as no specialty part was needed. “We carry parts with us, and are able to run diagnostics rapidly to see the issues. We get them up and running very quickly.” Peritore is proud of these numbers, and rightly so. “For non-clients calling us for an emergency repair, we have been able to respond in 30-90 minutes. In most calls, I was able to provide full functionality and safety in less than an hour.”

Peritore’s custom diagnostic software program allows continuity clients to avoid almost all emergency calls. During the year, he systematically runs diagnostic checks on any of the machines on the equipment management contract you develop. He then creates and proposes a task list, with percentages of usage (similar to a “how long until failure” timeline). This allows the client to decide if it is time to repair or replace aging or worn parts.

Local wineries have been finding it a money and time-saving proposition to have well-running equipment. Meeker Winery adds this testimonial, ”WSC has stepped in where the importer and dealer of our equipment has failed us. Dave’s knowledge of a wide range of manufacturers and equipment provides him resources and experience that has directly prevented us from extended downtime during harvest. When the equipment dealer did not have parts in inventory, or suggested replacing parts that weren’t in need of replacing, Dave was able to steer us to a faster, less expensive, and more accurate solution. In the world of winery equipment, where support after purchase often falls short, Dave’s service plans create consistency, reliability, and the peace of mind that a knowledgeable and time-sensitive solution is a phone call away.”

“The goals of Winery Service Connection are smooth production through reliable equipment,” says Peritore. “We have the unique ability to provide that for the wine industry.” Check out the explanatory video, other referrals and scope of services offered at http://wineryserviceconnection.com/home, or give Dave a call at the WSC Office at 707-849-2526 or email sales@wineryserviceconnection.com.

Winery Service Connection of Santa Rosa Wins a Wine Industry Award from the North Bay Business Journal
08 December, 2017

Read the North Bay Business Journal Article here

While working for a company providing mobile services to the wine industry, David Peritore discovered that too often equipment was not being adequately maintained and often failed during harvest.

“What is frustrating is that every year wineries that have equipment malfunctions when they must pick grapes and sometimes have to wait weeks to get help,” Peritore said. “Our experience shows that Winery Service Connection can reduce these failures to nearly zero.”

Using his background in data communications and the wine industry, Peritore created an online software program which streamlines production equipment management. With this service, clients get real-time access to the status of their equipment and can make instantaneous, fully informed repair and upgrade decisions

Peritore is convinced that other service teams in the wine industry could use this technology to benefit their clients and technicians while limiting production downtime.

“We focus on providing maintenance through technology,” he said. “We offer customers a more efficient maintenance experience by uncovering potential pitfalls and breakdowns before they occur. Our customers rely on our information to avoid surprises and lost time. Because maintenance is performed during the off-season, I am available to respond to true emergencies during harvest.”

According to Bruno Petiteaux, cellar master at Hanna Winery, the service allows access to current and historic reports without printing them.

“I can view and approve proposed tasks, see machine logs, prepare my budget for next year and know how much I’m spending on each type of equipment,” Petiteaux said. “This data helps me plan my schedule and have equipment ready for the harvest.”

Charles Barr, owner of Bennett Ridge Vineyards, said David Peritore learns as much as he can about every winery he supports, including intricate details about the equipment.

“He provides service and maintenance for various models and model years, while keeping records current and allocating his time to keep our equipment in top working order,” Barr said.

Having a one-stop-shop for all equipment management is important for Shelly Rafanelli-Fehlman, winemaker with A. Rafanelli Winery.

“We only have to deal with a single provider rather than many. WSC takes care of all the parts to be ordered as well as delivery,” Rafanelli-Fehlman said. “If we have a breakdown, David often arrives within an hour to make sure operations are not delayed.”

For Adam Larson, cellar master for Pahlmeyer Winery, “WSC’s technique of thoroughly documenting and photographing all of the estimated preharvest repairs needed for enrolled equipment has made it easy for me to understand what needs to be done. Having an itemized repair list has taken all of the mystery and guesswork out of routine maintenance.”

John Harley, winemaker at Marietta Cellars, agreed.

“WSC’s program is nothing like I have ever seen before,” Harley said. “Peritore provides a road map to future costs and preventive maintenance. There is comfort in knowing that my equipment will do what it is designed to do at the most crucial time of the year — and if it doesn’t — David will be there to fix it.”

Equipment Management Efficiency Will Save Thousands for Harvest 2017
20 June, 2017

There are not enough technicians to respond to the influx of service requests during harvest.
We have developed a program which deals directly with this fact.

WSC's proprietary maintenance software program is now available for subscription.
This is an exciting new approach to caring for equipment.

The following benefits are built in:

  • Maintain your own machinery, correctly.  This greatly decreases your chances of equipment failure during harvest.
  • Develop internal personnel.  If there is a problem with equipment, your personnel will be more familiar with the equipment.
  • Take better care of your equipment, put off purchasing new equipment.

-Develop internal personnel.  If there is a problem with equipment, your personnel will be more familiar with the equipment.

-Take better care of your equipment, put off purchasing new equipment.

Step 1:  Decide which machines you would like training on.

Step 2:  Contact WSC for a quote.

Step 3:   Subscribe to the software program.  Get your user name, pass-word and log into your account.

Step 4:   Using a hand held device connected to the internet, visit one of the machines on your list and start the software.

Step 5:  A report is automatically generated so that user and supervisors can easily review the data.

The software takes the user through an inspection process which breaks the machines down to inspection points which identify potential problems in the machine.  The user rates and documents inspection data in the program.  The information is formatted in a report.

Once all of the information is on the table, prioritizing tasks correctly is easy.

If your report shows service requirements which you believe require a higher level of experience, tasks can be sub contracted to WSC, the techs availalbe through local retailers or other service providers.

If you would like to know more, contact us and we would be happy to take you for a software test drive.

WSC is also available for consulting.

Case Study: Surprise!!! WSC saves the winery 6,978.00. Gear boxes.
17 February, 2015

CASE STUDY:  The case of the (not so) disposable gear boxes...

During our 2014 inspection, we identified that on 6 out of 9 enrolled conveyors; the gear boxes on the conveyors had contaminated oil in them.  The oil was contaminated with small bits of metal worn from the gears in the gear box.  When this debris circulates through the gear box, it significantly reduces the life span of the gear box because these metal bits grind away at the parts as they move.  Some of the gear boxes out there are "serviceable" and some are "disposable".  A disposable gear box is not intended to have its oil changed or any other wear parts for that matter.  When they fail, the manufacturer recommends you throw it away and purchase a new one.  This was the first year the customer enrolled in  our program so we didnt have this inspection information until May 21, 2014.  The lead time for new gear boxes was 11 weeks.  We had to come up with another plan; a plan other than Option A.

Option B:  We were able to access the insides of the gear box, remove, flush and replace the oil, remove and replace the oil seals and re-seal the gear box.  The customer enrolled in October of 2014; back on the program for 2015 with plenty of time to take care of it all.  We have already inspected these units.  They are looking great!  These 6 units ran well last year and we expect that thier lifetime is significantly improved due to our being involved.

Option A:  Calculation:

Cost to purchase 6 gear boxes:                                              6,600 + 528 (tax)                     =  7,128.00
Estimated cost for shipping of gear boxes: (.. these boxes weigh 100 pounds)                     =     300.00
estimate an average of an hour to replace each gear box.                                                     =     720.00
WSC oil disposal fee:                                                                                                              =       45.00

TOTAL COST TO REPLACE THESE 6 GEAR BOXES                                                         =   8,193.00
TOTAL TIME IT WOULD HAVE TAKEN TO DO THIS JOB:  11 weeks; not an option-

==============

Option B (actual):  Calculation:

WSC (labor) Cost to rebuid the 6 gear boxes:  (estimate 1.5 hour to rebuild each one)          =     720.00
Cost for oil and seals:                                                                                                               =     450.00
WSC oil disposal fee:                                                                                                                =       45.00

TOTAL COST TO REBUILD THESE 6 GEAR BOXES                                                            =    1,215.00
TOTAL TIME IT TOOK TO DO THIS JOB:                             2 weeks; time to spare.

===============

Outcome:
We saved the customer $$                                  8,193.00 - 1,215.00                                       =    $ 6,978
We saved the customer TIME:                            Project completed before harvest

One of WSC's most valuable assets is its large scope of supported equipment. If you would like to see us support other equipment, please let us know!

NOTE: Now that you have all of the information on the table with respect to production equipment reliability and performance levels;

Please review the next document which is: Proposed Tasks. The Proposed tasks is meant to accompany this report. This is where you approve work WSC recommends take place on your equipment. Please see below.

WSC is now offering a tool which is meant to be used by internal technicians which will develope them as well as make them more efficient.

This tool is loaded with machine specific checkpoints which are accessed using a device which is connected to the internet.

Your technician accesses the machine specific checkpoints and rates them, adds comments and images if they wish. Empirical data is what we base

our checkpoints on and so the technician focuses on all of the points which we have learned fail in this particular machine.

This process provides two benefits:

First: The process identifies, documents and communicates weak points of your equipment to your team thorugh the automatically generated report.

This report becomes a conversation and delegation tool where equipment shortcomings are reviewed, tasks created, prioritized and delegated.

Second: This process exposes and points out potential problem areas to the technician so a familiarity is gained. Before they know it, they are looking

at parts of the machine which need attention.

The client should consider the complexity of machines and the mechanical aptitude of the internal technician. If the technician identifies equipment

shortcomings which they are not comfortable repairing, the tasks can be sub-contracted to the equipment retailer technicians or WSC, depending on

availability. The important part of this process is that the inspection is performed and completely. This informs the customer of what tasks need to be

carried out before harvest. Whom performs the work is up to your team. We recommend that this process be carried out during the first quarter of the

year so that there is plenty of time to react to what this unique process reveals.

Before any work (including inspection) is performed on the equipment, make sure that power is turned off and the machine is locked out and tagged out.

The Equipment Management Program is "synchronized maintenance".

Motivation to enroll your production equipment

  • Despite "Equipment checks" and "Equipment Startups", many machines stop un-expectedly.
  • Priority emergency service: Our more thurough inspection and check makes us more available during harvest to respond to emergencies. You shouldent need a visit but if you do; enjoy relatively fast response times during harvest.
  • Winemaking focus on making wine; they feel confident about equipment health / performance levels.
  • Preventative maintenance pays for itself. Protect your investment in equipment and fruit!
  • WSC is regularly referred by most of the local retailers. They appreciate WSC's efforts and provide OEM specific software loads, proprietary parts and information when necessary.

Benefits Included with enrollment in the Equipment Management Program.

  • Priority Emergency Service during harvest. Priority is based on EM customer seniority (the number of consecutive years on the program).
  • Receive a "Detailed Report"online which clearly communicates performance and risk level of production equipment.
  • Receive a "Proposed Task List" online with budgeting information which allows for proper prioritization of tasks.
  • Historical equipment service logs online. see sample winery info, see tab
  • Maintenance is performed on enrolled machines (during the inspection visit), dessicant in electrical enclosures.
  • Grease point color coding and WSC ID tag is affixed so that your team knows how to properly lubricate.
  • By Harvest, Your equipment has been serviced, by you, yours or WSC if you choose.
  • Services performed on enrolled equipment are billed at discounted hourly repair rates.
  • Efficient Service: The more machines enrolled, the more effiicently we can serve you. We do our best to source all parts so that we can maximize service provided each visit. One travel charge and we will likely work on many machines.

Note: * If enrollment is not carried out during the first quarter, the target deliverable dates obviously move. In this; as all other

cases, WSC will make every attempt to serve. We recommend returning customers enroll early so that WSC and the customer may

maximize value and work more efficiently and at a more comfortable pace.

  • The price of enrollment is in some cases lower than a press check or equipment start-up for like machinery! Why wait until July or August to be informed about your equipment health and or performance levels? Now, you can have accuate timely information which will allow you to prioritize your service dollars accurately. Now that is smart spending.
