It would be so much easier if, after tasting the wines, your guests would immediately decide to purchase wine from you. Unfortunately, it is rare (although it does happen) that your guests will taste a few wines and say: “We will take three cases. How much do we owe you?”
Many times, guests will ask questions, which, while they may not sound like it, show their interest in purchasing. It is important for tasting room staff to be aware that the questions the guests ask or the comments they make can directly lead to a sale. Some questions or comments are positive and easy to read. For example:
1. “This wine is amazing!”
Agree with the guest and start thinking in terms of a case sale or more.
2. How many cases of this wine do you have left?
This may mean that they are trying to figure out how much to buy now or if there will be any left when they come back again in a month. Or they could be trying to decide whether they should take one case or two.
3. Do you ship out of state?
The answer is, hopefully, yes. Then ask them a couple of questions to make sure you can ship to their state. If you do not or cannot ship to their state suggest that you pack it for them so they can take the wine on the airplane.
If your guests ask questions about the wine, production, or medals the wines have won, it is a good sign that they are interested in the wine. They may also mention special events that are coming up in their family (birthday or anniversary or wedding).
