The SFD Filling Device, when used with high-precision measuring instruments such as CarboQC or CboxQC by Anton Paar, allows for the quick and reliable determination of dissolved CO₂, dissolved oxygen, and other gases in sparkling wine and wine. Additionally, it calculates the package pressure based on total dissolved gases, providing a comprehensive analysis of the sample.
Designed for ease of use, the SFD Filling Device pierces the cork of a sparkling wine bottle using a manually operated threaded tube. Once the cork is fully penetrated, the sample tube is lowered into the bottle, and the sample is transferred via pressurized air or nitrogen—without exposing the liquid to the atmosphere.
A tight seal between the piercing head and the bottle’s cork ensures that no CO₂ escapes during the process, preserving the sample’s integrity for precise measurement. The device can accommodate various bottle sizes, from small formats to magnums, by inserting the correct number of centering plates. It is also compatible with both plastic and traditional corks.
The SFD Filling Device is not just for sparkling wine—it can also be used for still wine sampling. When analyzing wine without carbonation, simply remove the cork and adjust the pressure for an equally effective sample transfer.
Designed with safety in mind, the SFD Filling Device features a protective housing to safeguard the operator during use. The device operates at pressures up to 7.5 bar (109 psi), but pressure is only applied once the bottle is securely locked in place, ensuring safe and controlled operation.
With its innovative design, precise sampling method, and CO₂-preserving technology, the SFD Filling Device is setting a new standard in sparkling wine and wine analysis. It offers a simple, accurate, and reliable way to ensure quality control while maintaining the integrity of every sample.
Ensure accurate, CO₂-preserved sampling with the SFD Filling Device.

Hofbräu München and Anton Paar:
Brewing Classic Beer Together
Located in Munich, Germany, the “Hofbräu München” brewery brews the beer for the “Hofbräuhaus,” one of the world’s most famous beer halls. With Anton Paar’s help, it produces well over 340,000 hectoliters of beer annually.
A trust-based partnership
According to Christian Beetz, brewer and deputy laboratory manager at the brewery, “With a reputation for producing stable, practical, and precise instruments, we knew we could trust Anton Paar.” So Hofbräu München has steadily expanded its measuring points with Anton Paar devices and built them into its QC network. “Since we had so many parameters we needed to measure,” remembers Beetz, head of quality assurance Thomas Brandt bought two of Anton Paar’s Alcolyzer Beer Analyzing Systems to automatically analyze alcohol and other parameters in our laboratory.” The brewery also uses inline sensors and portable instruments for the measurement of density (extract), dissolved CO2, and O2.
One solution covers it all
With its Anton Paar instruments, the brewery can measure over 15 parameters, including original extract, alcohol, dissolved carbon dioxide and oxygen, total packaged oxygen, turbidity, color, and pH. It can do this inline, at-line, and in the laboratory. As one member of the QC team at the brewery points out, Anton Paar’s allin-one measuring solution is a major benefit for his team. “I only have to have contact with one to two people. All inline devices are compatible with the same software, and all of them are collected and visualized on the same user interface.” Moreover, Davis 5, Anton Paar’s data visualization software, lets him calibrate and adjust his inline devices with laboratory values at the push of a button.
Measuring total packaged oxygen
Until recently, the lab team in the brewery had been using the caustic potash solution (KOH) to determine total packaged oxygen, which is an inconvenient, time-consuming technique that produces inaccurate, non-repeatable results.
Since 2021, the brewery has been using Anton Paar’s TPO 5000 total packaged oxygen meter, which has made the measuring process more straightforward, faster, and more accurate. With TPO 5000, Beetz says, the team can “measure headspace and dissolved oxygen separately. It’s much easier now for us. I insert a bottle into the instrument and after just a few minutes, I get a reliable result that is fully comparable with other measurements made on other Anton Paar devices. That’s great.”
Future challenges, future opportunities
Hofbräu München has more beverage brands than ever, and its portfolio will continue to expand. For Beetz and his team, this means more effort in the laboratory and a higher demand for measurement technologies that are fast and practical. “Seeing what the future holds for automated measurements, particularly regarding speed. Getting faster in this area would be a fascinating development.”
Another challenge is lowering oxygen values to ensure beer stability. Since beer is being transported farther than ever before storage times are also getting longer. “Because of this,” says Beetz, “we have to ensure only beer that is stable over the long-term is put into the bottles. This is critical so that we make sure every consumer gets that same Hofbräu beer taste that we are known for.”
While the QC team at Hofbräu München acknowledge these obstacles for the future, the team is confident that the brewery will overcome them – just as it has for over 400 years. Every challenge is also an opportunity. And that’s how the QC team approaches its day-to-day work at Hofbräu München.

The Beginning
1982 was a remarkable year: Michael Jackson released the album Thriller, Steven Spielberg's blockbuster E.T. was shown in the cinemas, the first Commodore 64 was launched – and Anton Paar founded its first sales subsidiary in Great Britain.
From the early 1970s, Anton Paar products were distributed in the United Kingdom by Stanton Redcroft Ltd. In 1982, Sales Manager Bryan Leslie Treherne and brothers Kevin and Paul Jiggens, as well as Mike Stevens, decided to break new ground. After a visit of then Anton Paar CEO Ulrich Santner and his daughter Barbara, the decision was made to establish the first sales subsidiary in London. On January 6, 1982, Paar Scientific Ltd. finally started in a small office in Raynes Park near Wimbledon in South London. It was a small store located between a Chinese take-away and a tile store. In 2004, the company name was changed to Anton Paar Ltd. A branch office was established by the British sales subsidiary in Dublin in 2011, and in 2021 it became Anton Paar Ireland.
“We are all very proud to be celebrating our 40th anniversary at Anton Paar Ltd,” says Anton Paar UK Managing Director Huw Bevan,” who has been General Manager since 2014 and will host a 40-year celebratory evening party in London. “This is a fantastic achievement and true testament to the drive, enthusiasm, and commitment of our employees and the support we have received from our customers. We look forward to continuing our growth together over the next 40 years.”
Ongoing Growth in St. Albans
Since 2012, Anton Paar Ltd. has been located in the cathedral city of St. Albans, about 40 kilometers north of London. Around the turn of the century, the company had 13 employees and achieved a turnover of just over 1.5 million pounds (about 2.2 million euros). Today, Anton Paar Ltd. employs 46 people, and its turnover has increased enormously, to more than 10 million pounds (11.65 million euros).
“The true value of our company lies in the knowledge, drive, and enthusiasm of our employees” says Bevan. “Many of them have been with Anton Paar for quite a few years, and we currently have seven colleagues with more than 15 years’ service. In 2018, our longest serving employee, Brian Phillips, retired after an amazing 30 years with the company!”
New Location for the Future
Despite the headwind caused by the UK’s decision to leave the EU, there are still plenty of opportunities for further growth. The company serves an increasingly broad range of customers across industries, such as beverage, academia, chemical, and pharmaceutical.
According to Bevan, the company will expand further in the next few years, and a new location is already being planned: “The new headquarters will be more than twice the size of the office in St. Albans,” he says. “The completion of this project will take a few years. Then we will be able to celebrate another landmark in our history.”
Anton Paar develops, produces, and distributes highly accurate laboratory instruments and process measuring systems, and provides custom-tailored automation and robotic solutions. It is the world leader in the measurement of density, concentration, and CO2 and in the field of rheometry. For decades, the company has invested around 20 percent of Anton Paar GmbH’s turnover in R&D.
The success of Anton Paar Ltd. mirrors that of the Graz-headquartered company as a whole: 100 years after Anton Paar founded a small machine shop, Anton Paar is now a global corporation, with over 3,600 employees, 45 sister companies and subsidiaries, 50 sales partners, and operations in more than 110 countries around the world.
The company's success story began on January 4, 1922, when Anton Paar founded his machine shop. At that time, no one would have imagined that this one-man operation would one day become a global corporation with currently more than 3,600 employees.
From the rough to the detailed
Even in the early years of the company, Anton Paar planned for the long term and involved his family, so his two daughters Hermine and Margareta, called Gretl, worked in their father's business. While Hermine was responsible for the bookkeeping, Margareta worked in the workshop. Later, Anton Paar gradually withdrew from the business. Gretl, at that time the first female master machinist in Styria, took over the management. Especially the proper training of apprentices was close to her heart.
Gretl Platzer's (formerly Paar) expertise and talent in the field of precision mechanics and manufacturing, but also the intensive interaction with universities and research institutes, formed the basis for many inventions. A milestone in the company's history is the Kratky small-angle X-ray camera, which was Anton Paar's first scientific analytical instrument.
Expansion to world market leader
From the 1960s onwards, the company focused on measuring and analysis technology – the ultimate beginning of the success story. From beer, wine and soft drink producers to pharmaceutical and cosmetics companies to chocolate or cell phone display manufacturers – they all rely on the technical know-how and instruments of the Anton Paar Group.
In 1963, Platzer's son-in-law Ulrich Santner (1932-2020) took over the management of the company. He set the foundation for the company's expansion in the field of measurement technology later on. Ulrich Santner made contacts with universities and contributed to the transfer of new technologies from research to industry. Finally, in 1997, his son-in-law and current CEO Friedrich Santner joined the management.
Many new sales and service subsidiaries were established under his leadership, and complementary measurement technology companies were acquired. As a result, the company's growth has been strong, both in terms of sales and number of employees. Anton Paar GmbH now has 45 sister companies and sales subsidiaries as well as 50 sales partners and operates in more than 110 countries around the world. Friedrich Santner also focused on expanding internal research and development.
Charitable foundation and the fifth generation
The non-profit Santner Private Foundation has owned the company since 2003. The foundation has two purposes: to promote non-profit science and research as well as to prevent and combat drug addiction.
In January 2020, Friedrich Santner's sons Jakob and Dominik Santner joined the company's Executive Board, making it the fifth generation to be part of the management team.
For 100 years now, the company has combined high-precision technology with scientific curiosity and a thirst for research. Among other things, this has made Anton Paar the world market leader in the fields of density and concentration measurement, rheometry and CO2 measurement.
"Talent, commitment and inner cohesion, in both successful and difficult times, have always distinguished us and our company. With these attributes, we are confidently entering the second century of our history," resumes CEO Friedrich Santner.
