Deliver Wine Directly to Consumers? Not so Fast!!!
Did you know that each state has its own laws regarding wine deliveries directly to consumers? You can’t ship it via the US Postal Service; however, FedEx and UPS are permitted carriers in states where shipping is allowed.
According to the Wall Street Journal, some states limit how much can be shipped directly to consumers. Some states allow direct shipments to consumers only from wineries producing less than 30,000 gallons per year. Other states, such as New Jersey, have a limit of wineries making no more than 250,000 gallons per year to be able to directly ship to consumers. It’s a crazy patchwork of laws, mostly left over from Prohibition.
As a winery, getting your wine to consumers is of utmost importance. Knowing what the laws are in your state and the states where you are trying to ship your wines is important to you. This can have an impact on your advertising as well as your production efforts.
Reaching consumers in states where you can ship directly to them is a real option. The result of this patchwork of laws impacts not only wineries but also consumers. Consistent laws across states would help but it’s not likely to happen anytime soon given differing attitudes towards alcohol.
