In case it has slipped anyone’s memory it is grape harvest and wine-making time.
It is also the time that the wine tasting, wine drinking, and wine buying public likes to be at the winery so they can experience the harvest, talk to you about how it is going, and perhaps get some inside tips on what they should be buying next year.
For you, it is the time to make your new and long-time customers feel welcome and connected with your winery. Your customers will also want to see you making wine. If you can open the cellar while the work is going on to give your customers a glimpse of what you are doing it will make them feel closer to the winery and make them regular customers.
These customers will also feel more connected with your winery and wines, buy more and bring their friends back to introduce them to your fine wines and hospitality. Many of them will feel as if they are part of the winery and therefore more loyal.
I know it is a lot to ask of the wineries, especially the smaller wineries that don’t have as many people on staff, but it is well worth it to hire some temporary staff (you may only need one or two extra people) to help with the larger numbers of visitors.
Or perhaps your regular staff might like to pick up a few extra hours at this time of year; after all, the holidays are coming up and most people can use a little extra money.
Whichever you choose, make sure that your staff members (temporary or permanent) are trained well and know how to make the customers feel welcome.
A tip of the glass from me to you!

Other Seminars & Training
Staff and management training should be as integral a part of the operation of a successful winery as using the very best grapes and producing top notch wines. Yet, despite its iymportance, it is the component of business operations that is most easily and most often ignored. In fact, it is frequently not recognized as a component of successful business operations at all.
E (as she is known) presents seminars and workshops on a variety of marketing and sales subjects to wineries and winery associations throughout North America. She is a featured speaker at Wineries Unlimited and presents regularly at state and province conferences working across the US and Canada.
In Short was started as a direct marketing company in 1994 and added workshops and seminars to the mix in 1997. Elizabeth's dynamic and humorous speaking style has made her a popular and busy speaker both in and out of the wine industry.
"In Short Direct Marketing is an essential business tool." - Maureen Hendrikson, Patit Creek Cellars
