Calling Wine Club Members

You can’t make successful calls to wine club members unless you are prepared.

Have the information in front of you when you call them.

Plan your call

• Know why you are making the call and what you want the results of the call to be.

• Write out the points you want to cover in the call.

If you are more comfortable working from a script, write one. You don’t have to keep to the script, though it will serve as a reminder.

• Read over the file of the person you are calling so you know how to approach them.

  • Have an additional script to use if you have to leave a message.
    • Your name and company
    • Why you are calling
    • Ask them to return the call or tell them you will call them back
    • Again, leave your name, company name, and phone number

•  If you do reach the wine club member spend a few seconds in general conversation.

  • “How are you enjoying the wine?”
  • “Are the club shipments being delivered in good shape?

Keep it personal

  • If in the past they have told you anything about their family, friends or hobbies ask a couple of questions on those topics.
  • Make notes of what they tell you to add to their file.
  • A couple of minutes of small talk – then get to the point of the call.
  • Listen for cues that indicate your customer is ready to end the conversation.

Give member time to talk

  • If they want to chat with you, give them the time. They may want to tell you about:
  • One of your wines they enjoyed
  • The people who shared the wine with them
  • Where they drank the wine

Listen and show interest in your response.

  • Remember that many of your wine club members think of you as a friend.
  • Don’t be in a hurry, they are your wine club members.

Be aware of your customers’ time and mood

  • Listen for cues that will tell you if they want to keep talking.

 Other Seminars & Training

Staff and management training should be as integral a part of the operation of a successful winery as using the very best grapes and producing top notch wines. Yet, despite its iymportance, it is the component of business operations that is most easily and most often ignored. In fact, it is frequently not recognized as a component of successful business operations at all.

E (as she is known) presents seminars and workshops on a variety of marketing and sales subjects to wineries and winery associations throughout North America. She is a featured speaker at Wineries Unlimited and presents regularly at state and province conferences working across the US and Canada.

In Short was started as a direct marketing company in 1994 and added workshops and seminars to the mix in 1997.  Elizabeth's dynamic and humorous speaking style has made her a popular and busy speaker both in and out of the wine industry.

"In Short Direct Marketing is an essential business tool." - Maureen Hendrikson, Patit Creek Cellars
