Questions First, Information Later

Many wineries present a lot of information about the different wines they make before discovering how much the guests that they are speaking with know about wine.

Not all the guests you speak with will tell you if they don’t understand what you are talking about or that they don’t know much about wine at all. They will just let you talk and leave the winery no wiser about wine than they were when they came in.

Prior to asking questions of your guests, welcome them to the winery and then introduce yourself to them. Usually, when you tell them your name, your guess will introduce themselves. If they don’t, ask them for their names. If you are not good at remembering people’s names, make sure you have a pen and paper behind the bar so you can write down their names. Your guests will be more willing to listen to you if you use their names.

Before you begin talking about the wine, start by asking your guests a few questions about themselves. As well as the general questions that winery employees ask guests (names, where they are from), ask your guests questions that they may not be expecting. For example:

  • If they have a favorite wine – and, if so, what is it.
  • If they enjoy a glass of wine with dinner or when they go out.

Vary your questions to reflect what part wine plays in the lives of your guests. If you are talking to guests who know a lot about wine, ask them:

  • If you could only drink one wine for the next year, what wine would it be?

If your winery produces the same varietal or a wine that you believe is outstanding, make sure your guests try that wine. Let them know that this is a wine that could be a wine for a year.

Think of questions that can start a conversation with your guests and let them tell you about what will work for them.

 Other Seminars & Training

Staff and management training should be as integral a part of the operation of a successful winery as using the very best grapes and producing top notch wines. Yet, despite its iymportance, it is the component of business operations that is most easily and most often ignored. In fact, it is frequently not recognized as a component of successful business operations at all.

E (as she is known) presents seminars and workshops on a variety of marketing and sales subjects to wineries and winery associations throughout North America. She is a featured speaker at Wineries Unlimited and presents regularly at state and province conferences working across the US and Canada.

In Short was started as a direct marketing company in 1994 and added workshops and seminars to the mix in 1997.  Elizabeth's dynamic and humorous speaking style has made her a popular and busy speaker both in and out of the wine industry.
