How are You Handling Crowds at the Tasting Room?

Did your holiday sales meet your expectations? If not, what was missing?

  • The customers?
  • Visitors’ willingness to buy?
  • Not enough staff to serve the customers in a timely manner?
  • Not enough wine?
  • Not enough sales?
  • More customers than you planned for?
  • Not enough wine?

It is hard to estimate how many customers you will have on holiday weekends or during holiday weekends. So… it is important to track, not only the number of people but also how many people you see every hour or even half an hour. One way around this is to station a staff member at the entrance to greet the guests and to track the number of people visiting the winery. If you are very busy you may need two people at the door, especially if they are putting on wristbands or explaining what the special wines available are and their prices.

It may be helpful to hand guests a list of your specials, showing a short description of each wine, the price, and (in the case of wines that are in short supply) the number of bottles or cases that you have on hand.  Also, of course, any specials that you are offering that day.

Make it as easy as you can for guests to taste the wines and buy the wine. If you usually see many people during special events, set up buying stations in different places so it is easy for guests to buy.  Make sure the guests have easy access to the sales areas so they don’t have to wait for too long. If there are lines for buying, offer a small pour of an older vintage or something that is not on the tasting sheet to keep your guests interest. If you have them, tastes of older wines are always appreciated.

Above all, no matter how tired you are or how many people you have seen, stay cheerful and keep smiling long after your face and your feet start hurting.

 Other Seminars & Training

Staff and management training should be as integral a part of the operation of a successful winery as using the very best grapes and producing top notch wines. Yet, despite its iymportance, it is the component of business operations that is most easily and most often ignored. In fact, it is frequently not recognized as a component of successful business operations at all.

E (as she is known) presents seminars and workshops on a variety of marketing and sales subjects to wineries and winery associations throughout North America. She is a featured speaker at Wineries Unlimited and presents regularly at state and province conferences working across the US and Canada.

In Short was started as a direct marketing company in 1994 and added workshops and seminars to the mix in 1997.  Elizabeth's dynamic and humorous speaking style has made her a popular and busy speaker both in and out of the wine industry.
