Connecting with Your Customers

Here we are in the middle of the busy season, with more people visiting your winery each day and many of them coming in at the same time. On some days, it is as though a bell goes off somewhere and visitors to the area all decide to head to your winery at the same time.

As two or three cars drive into your parking lot or walk into your winery at the same time, it is important that when they reach the tasting room each couple or group is greeted warmly and individually.

Taking the customers in the order that they walked into the tasting room, spend a minute or so getting to know what brought your customers to your winery using different opening lines. Naturally, before you start asking questions about their wine preferences and knowledge, take a good look at the people who have just arrived to see if they look familiar.

Introduce yourself and ask them for their names. If you don’t have a good memory, or it is a busy time of the year and you are seeing lots of people jot down their names on a piece of paper.

Ask if they are familiar with your winery and wines.

  • Is this their first visit to our winery?
  • What brought them to the area?
  • Have they visited your winery before?
  • Are they familiar with your wines?
  • The name of their favorite wine (if they have one)
  • Is wine a regular part of their lives?

In short, find out as much as you can about their wine drinking habits and their enjoyment of wine without overwhelming them.

Give your guests time to answer your questions and to tell you what they want you to know. Each of your guests is different and wants different things from you. Take a little time to get to know them as an individual.

Next week, more ways to connect.

 Other Seminars & Training

Staff and management training should be as integral a part of the operation of a successful winery as using the very best grapes and producing top notch wines. Yet, despite its iymportance, it is the component of business operations that is most easily and most often ignored. In fact, it is frequently not recognized as a component of successful business operations at all.

E (as she is known) presents seminars and workshops on a variety of marketing and sales subjects to wineries and winery associations throughout North America. She is a featured speaker at Wineries Unlimited and presents regularly at state and province conferences working across the US and Canada.

In Short was started as a direct marketing company in 1994 and added workshops and seminars to the mix in 1997.  Elizabeth's dynamic and humorous speaking style has made her a popular and busy speaker both in and out of the wine industry.

"In Short Direct Marketing is an essential business tool." - Maureen Hendrikson, Patit Creek Cellars
