“You never have a second chance to make a good first impression.” - Will Rogers.
Are you making a good first impression with all or at least most of your customers? If not, what can you do to make a good or even great first impression with your guests?
Just as you may be sizing up your guests as they walk into the winery, your guests are sizing you up, as well as sizing up the winery.
Do your guests see:
These first impressions are the ones that will stay with them through the rest of their visit and make them more willing to buy wine from you or join the wine club.
When you are first speaking to your guests, start by asking them three or four questions about their relationship with wine including their familiarity with your wines. When you start by getting information about your guests you know how to talk to them about wine. Should you be using more technical wine terms because they enjoy wines and know a lot about them? Or should you be speaking in more simple wine terms as this is the first time your guests have been wine tasting?
Just knowing your guests’ familiarity with wine and if they regularly drink wine allows you to speak in language with which your guests are more likely to be familiar. This makes your guests more comfortable and makes them more willing to buy.
Your goal is always to make your guests feel comfortable, as uncomfortable guests are less likely to buy wine or will not buy as many bottles of wine as they would otherwise.
Taking a few minutes getting to know a little about your guests will pay dividends in increased sales and turning first-time guests into long-term customers and friends.
A tip of the glass from me to you!

Other Seminars & Training
Staff and management training should be as integral a part of the operation of a successful winery as using the very best grapes and producing top notch wines. Yet, despite its iymportance, it is the component of business operations that is most easily and most often ignored. In fact, it is frequently not recognized as a component of successful business operations at all.
E (as she is known) presents seminars and workshops on a variety of marketing and sales subjects to wineries and winery associations throughout North America. She is a featured speaker at Wineries Unlimited and presents regularly at state and province conferences working across the US and Canada.
In Short was started as a direct marketing company in 1994 and added workshops and seminars to the mix in 1997. Elizabeth's dynamic and humorous speaking style has made her a popular and busy speaker both in and out of the wine industry.
"In Short Direct Marketing is an essential business tool." - Maureen Hendrikson, Patit Creek Cellars
