A Conversation with Silvino Carreras, Production Manager, and Kay Rodriguez, Outbound Logistics Manager about Summer Shipping
At Copper Peak Logistics, wine summer shipping is never approached casually. Behind every successful delivery is a carefully coordinated operational strategy designed to protect the integrity of the wine while maintaining the premium experience wineries expect for their customers.
Few people understand that responsibility better than Silvino Carreras , Production Manager, and Kay Rodriguez , Outbound Logistics Manager. As employee numbers three and four at CPL, both have spent the last 19 years helping shape the operational foundation and craftsmanship-driven culture that defines the company today.
Together, Silvino and Kay oversee the movement of thousands of shipments during the most challenging shipping months of the year, balancing temperature sensitivity, carrier logistics, packaging strategy, and customer expectations with precision and care.
“People sometimes think wine shipping is just putting bottles in boxes,” Silvino said. “But every bottle represents years of work in the vineyard and winery. Our responsibility is to protect that all the way to the consumer’s doorstep.”
Kay agreed. “Wine is incredibly delicate. Heat exposure can flatten aromas, compromise flavor profiles, and push corks. During summer months, every operational decision matters.”
Preparing Operations for Peak Summer Shipping
As temperatures rise, the CPL operations team begins implementing seasonal procedures designed specifically to keep wine moving safely and efficiently.
“We start preparing long before summer actually arrives,” Kay explained. “Freezers are stocked, temperature-controlled packaging inventories are built up, and we coordinate closely with carrier partners to prepare for increased heat and seasonal volume.”
Silvino’s production team manages club fulfillment, kitting, and specialty packaging projects, while Kay’s outbound logistics team oversees ecommerce, tasting room, and custom fulfillment operations. Together, the departments operate as a synchronized system designed to reduce delays and minimize temperature exposure throughout the shipping journey.
“We’ve spent years refining our process flows,” Silvino said. “The goal is to create operational flexibility so we can react quickly to weather patterns, carrier changes, and customer delivery needs without compromising quality.”
Temperature Protection Beyond the Warehouse
Temperature control remains one of the most critical aspects of wine summer shipping.
“Our insulated packaging is specifically designed to reduce temperature fluctuations during transit,” Kay explained. “We use specialized packaging configurations that accommodate ice packs and sustainable insulation materials while maintaining presentation quality.”
For regions experiencing extreme heat, CPL’s weather hold capabilities allow winery partners to strategically pause shipments by state, carrier, or service level while still maintaining flexibility for urgent orders.
“Holds can always be managed at the individual order level,” Silvino noted. “That gives wineries control without completely stopping business during hot weather.”
Kay also highlighted CPL’s Summer Discounted Overnight Program and Arrive55 service as key operational tools during the summer months.
“Arrive55 provides an additional layer of protection by helping ensure temperature-controlled delivery all the way to the customer’s door,” Kay said. “It allows wineries to continue shipping confidently, even during the hottest parts of the year.”
Craftsmanship Beyond Logistics
While operational efficiency is critical, both Silvino and Kay emphasized that wine fulfillment is also deeply connected to presentation and brand experience.
“There’s something special about opening a shipment from a winery,” Kay said. “Every detail matters, the labels, foils, tissue paper, branded seals, and bottle arrangement all contribute to the consumer experience.”
Silvino added, “We see fulfillment as an extension of the winery itself. The care they put into growing grapes and producing wine continues through our operation.”
That philosophy has become central to CPL’s long-standing approach to fulfillment: craftsmanship at every touchpoint.
“Our winery partners nurture the product from vineyard to bottle,” Silvino said. “We carry that responsibility forward through the supply chain.”
Summer Shipping Tips from Silvino and Kay
After nearly two decades managing wine fulfillment operations together, Silvino and Kay shared several recommendations to help winery partners navigate summer shipping successfully:
Communicate early with Client Services. Advance planning allows CPL to coordinate packaging inventory, freezer capacity, and carrier forecasting.
Submit overnight orders early in the day. Early processing helps shipments make first pickups and reduces risks associated with delays or missed flights.
Understand packaging limitations. Temperature-controlled packaging is not available in all the same configurations as standard pulp packaging.
Wood boxes can still be protected. Bottles may be removed from wood boxes and repacked into insulated configurations while preserving presentation quality. We have custom outer shippers that can often allow for both the empty wood box and insulated wine shipper to be combined in one shipment.
Plan carefully for non-wine items. Certain temperature-controlled shipping methods may require separate packaging for merchandise or ancillary items.
Built on Experience
Nineteen years after joining CPL as employees three and four, Silvino Carreras and Kay Rodriguez remain deeply involved in the day-to-day execution of winery fulfillment operations.
Their longevity reflects something foundational about Copper Peak Logistics itself: operational consistency, deep industry knowledge, and a commitment to protecting the winery experience from cellar to doorstep.
“As operations professionals, we know the details matter,” Kay said. “Every shipment represents someone’s brand, someone’s craftsmanship, and someone’s customer.”
Silvino smiled and raised a metaphorical glass. “And preserving that experience is something we’re all proud of.”
Cheers to craftsmanship fulfillment and preserving the magic of wine.
