The journey of a wine does not end at bottling—it continues to evolve until the moment it is enjoyed. While vineyard practices and winemaking decisions lay the foundation, the choice of closure plays a crucial role in shaping the wine’s evolution over time.
Research conducted through a collaboration between M. A. Silva and the University of Aveiro (Portugal) demonstrates that different closure types influence the physical, chemical, and sensory development of red wines in distinct ways. Although these effects are already noticeable during short- and medium-term bottle ageing, they become increasingly pronounced as storage time extends.
These findings reinforce that the closure is far more than a sealing solution: it is a strategic oenological tool. By selecting the most suitable closure, winemakers can better guide a wine’s ageing trajectory, preserve its intended style, and enhance the sensory experience delivered to consumers.
