Atlas Copco’s employee-led Water for All program is supporting the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, where millions of people are on the move and the need for water, sanitation, and hygiene is pressing. Atlas Copco North America’s initial donation is $50,000, with a goal to double this contribution over the coming months. The Atlas Copco Group has a global network of Water for All organizations who are all teaming up and working to make donations that support Ukraine through the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA).
This support is in addition to the Group donation of 1 million SEK to United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the organization dedicated to saving lives and protecting the rights of refugees. The donation goes to UNHCR’s efforts to assist those seeking protection from the war in Ukraine.
In addition, as part of World Water Day, Atlas Copco will support a clean water project in the country of Peru. Celebrated annually on March 22, the United Nations created World Water Day to educate and raise awareness surrounding water and climate change. Atlas Copco has long supported this day through a series of awareness-raising events and donations to worthy causes across the globe.
The theme of World Water Day 2022 is Groundwater. Groundwater is invisible, but its impact is visible everywhere. Out of sight, and under our feet, groundwater is a hidden treasure that enriches our lives, as most all of the liquid freshwater in the world is groundwater. As climate change becomes more severe, groundwater will become more and more critical.
The donation to Peru is through Water for People, an organization that has been long supported by Atlas Copco. In Peru, despite economic growth in recent years, COVID-19 has led to an increasing poverty level. In rural areas, only 22% of people have access to safely managed water systems, and safe sanitation services are nearly non-existent. The donation of $40,000 will support three projects across the districts of Asunción and Reque and will include piped water systems and hygiene awareness projects.
“None of this would be possible without the dedication and focus of hundreds of employees driving and funding the program,” said Aaron Prato, vice president at Atlas Copco North America. "An employee-led organization is so powerful as it unites the will of the people and brings us all together to support such worthy causes and get help to where it’s needed in the quickest time – in countries all across the world."
In the last twelve years, Atlas Copco’s North American Water for All program has supported 59 projects across 21 countries and helped several hundred-thousand people gain access to clean water – donating over 2.3 million-dollars in the process. This includes domestic disaster relief projects in the U.S. including in Texas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado. For every dollar an employee donates, the company adds another two dollars, making a double match.
