When you work in a tasting room you usually have a lot of information about your wines to pass along to your customers. With all the information you have to present to your customers about the wine, it is easy to give them too many facts and might end up confusing them.
Before you start talking about the wines, get some information about the people you are serving by asking them some questions. Naturally what you ask them depends on who they are:
If they are regular customers, the questions you will ask them are going to be much different from the questions that you would ask first-time guests.
With first-time guests, you need to spend a little time finding out about them and their familiarity with your winery. Some of the questions you might want to ask:
If they tell you they were at another winery and the person there recommended you, ask the customers which winery they were at so that you can thank the winery.
If they were recommended by friends, find out who their friends are. If they are people who are on your list or who are regular customers, drop them an email or a note to thank them for recommending their friends. Make a note to offer them something special the next time they come into the winery.
Show an interest in new customers. Ask if they are familiar with your wines:
Ask a few questions about their interest in wine.
This helps you present the information that suits their level of knowledge.
These things help personalize the visit and will bring them back.
A tip of the glass from me to you!
