Vinventions Launches Nomacorc Ocean, the First Wine Closure Which Helps Protect Our Oceans

Nomacorc Ocean is a new closure from Vinventions, and the first closure worldwide made using Ocean Bound Plastic. For this launch, Vinventions has forged two partnerships. In Sicily, Donnafugata estate has joined Vinventions in its actions to preserve the oceans by choosing Nomacorc Ocean for its Damarino cuvée. In France, Maison Bouey has chosen this closure for its fully eco-designed cuvée Oh La Vache!

Taking care of the environment and helping preserve our planet have long been core values for Vinventions. With the launch of Nomacorc Ocean, Vinventions takes a new step in driving the wine industry towards sustainability and a circular economy by offering a wine closure made using recycled, ocean-bound plastics, collected in coastal regions to help limit marine pollution.

For this launch, Vinventions has forged two partnerships with companies both rooted in wine traditions and oriented towards the future through their strong commitment to sustainability. In Italy, the Sicilian estate Donnafugata, which has been committed to sustainability for 30 years, has chosen this closure for its Damarino cuvée. In France, Maison Bouey, the famous Bordeaux trader of the Bouey family, established in the Médoc since 1821, has chosen the Nomacorc Ocean closure for its fully eco-designed cuvée Oh La Vache!.

Many actions are taken worldwide to help limit marine pollution. Some actions aim to block waste before it reaches the ocean. Nomacorc Ocean uses a raw material from waste diverted from the oceans called Ocean-Bound Plastic (OBP), to give them a second life and prevent them from polluting the ocean.

“Based on scientific studies, OBP is estimated to generate 80 % of plastic marine litter. By recycling OBP and using it in a new product, the aim is being part of the value chain, at our scale, to increase the demand for harvesting waste and thus reduce its volume and the risk it presents for nature. To be effective against this pollution, the areas for collection matters. The recycled raw material used for Nomacorc Ocean comes from coastal areas located in Asia, where marine pollution is considered the highest,” says Romain Thomas, Nomacorc Product Manager at Vinventions.

Located in the center of the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily is an island with a unique climate and incredible biodiversity. With its estates covering more than 400 hectares of vineyards, Donnafugata is firmly rooted in this environment. “We are proud that Vinventions has chosen us to launch this project – explains Josè Rallo, owner of Donnafugata with his brother Antonio – because it strengthens our commitment to environmental sustainability and safeguarding the nature, especially the seas and oceans. Thanks to the use of this closure on our Damarino wines, we contribute to the recycling of an equivalent of 1.15 tons of OBP.”

For all actions towards sustainability, Vinventions choses to follow the best practices and certifications related to the existing standards. For Nomacorc Ocean, the OBP is collected by an organization certified to Zero Plastics Oceans’ standards. The certification ensures that OBP is collected under ethical and profitable conditions, which are audited, and that collection areas and waste collected are compliant with the OBP definition given by Zero Plastic Oceans. This guarantees that collection efforts have the highest impact on preventing marine pollution.

“When Vinventions introduced us to Nomacorc Ocean, I immediately saw the positive impact of this closure. Being a surfer myself, being able to cork our wines with a closure that helps make the oceans cleaner was obvious. The Nomacorc Ocean also allows our wine Oh La Vache! to achieve an excellent level of eco-design,” explains Yann Bouey, Asia-Pacific Zone Director for Maison Bouey.

With Nomacorc Ocean, Vinventions’ aim is also to offer its customers and the end consumer the option of contributing to the protection of our oceans. Do you want to be part of the change and act aside Vinventions?

The NomaSense O2, Reference TPO-Meter of the Wine Industry, Becomes a Connected Decision-Making Tool

Vinventions launches a new version of NomaSense O2. This oxygen analyzer, available in the WQS range of enological tools, now becomes a complete oxygen management tool throughout the winemaking process.

Since its launch in 2009, the NomaSense O2 has set the standard in the wine industry for precise and real-time measurement of dissolved oxygen in wines and gaseous oxygen. Thanks to its functionalities, it is the only tool in the sector to allow TPO (Total Package Oxygen) measurements, a key parameter for oxygen management in wines at the time of bottling.

Now, this analyzer is equipped with a new digital interface and new features to further facilitate oxygen management throughout the winemaking process.

“We have developed this new version of the NomaSense O2 to make it a fully-fledged decision-making tool, by completely redesigning the user interface to make it easier to use, intuitive and adapted to the needs of the field. With the display of alerts and expert rules during the checkpoints performed, users are guided in their decisions, especially at certain winemaking stages where oxygen control is crucial for wine quality,” explains Christine Pascal, Enology Research and WQS Products Manager at Vinventions.

Among the innovations, the calibration management is simplified. On-screen monitoring of oxygen controls performed along a process makes it possible to immediately visualize critical points of oxygen intake and thus facilitate the resolution of problems. For bottling controls, the TPO is calculated automatically, including with the use of the Piercing System in bottle and BIB. The display of the expert rules, in the case where oxygen intake is too high, immediately indicates to the operator which critical point to improve (variability in the draw or capping heads, increase in the level of dissolved oxygen at the filter outlet etc.).

Like the PolyScan, the NomaSense O2 is now connected. “The collection and statistical analysis of anonymized data makes this tool scalable, both in terms of updating decision rules and sharing the knowledge acquired with users at the various
stages where the checks are carried out. In addition, saving and exporting data is easier for users,” says Emmanuel Brenon, WQS tool development manager at Vinventions.

Luminescence technology and features, such as built-in sugar and alcohol compensation for accurate results, remain unchanged.  Similarly, all accessories associated with the old NomaSense O2 version remain compatible with this new version.

Revolutionary Wine Closure Company Continues to Drive “Sustainable Innovation”

Vinventions, the most comprehensive provider of closure solutions for the global wine marketplace, has always been ahead of the curve.

Since its inception in 1999, Vinventions has been the source of innovative bottle closures created to support the diverse needs of the wine community that maximize performance, design, and sustainability.

According to Vinventions Brand Manager Mike Clayton, the primary focus is about preserving the quality and consistency of the wine through the most sustainable means possible.

“For us, it’s about performance and sustainability,” Clayton confirms. “If you buy 12 bottles using one of our closures, which are always manufactured with ‘sustainability’ in mind, we can guarantee that the wine in all 12 of those bottles will taste consistent, the way the vintner intended.”

For their inner-seal closures, Vinventions uses a patented co-extrusion process that ensures consistency. This allows winemakers to maintain control over oxygen ingress post-bottling and ensures the consumer gets a wine they can depend on.

Vinventions is home to an ever-evolving portfolio of distinct products and services created to address the requirements of the complex, dynamic, worldwide wine community. With each innovation, they push to become more sustainable. The portfolio includes:

  • Normacorc “Green Line”: The first ever certified zero carbon footprint closure. These fully recyclable closures are derived from sustainable, renewable, sugarcane-based raw materials.
  • Normacorc “Blue Line”: A new category of recyclable closures in which 50 percent of the raw material comes from plastic recycling.
  • SÜBR: The world’s first polyurethane-free and taint-free micro-natural closure.
  • Vintop Screwcaps: High performance screw cap closures created primarily for premium wines with customized, multi-feature cap designs and liners.
  • Wine Quality Solutions: A cutting-edge line of oxygen management instruments and tools resulting from years of research into understanding how oxygen ingress through closures influences wine development across a variety of functions.

“Vinventions has really pioneered oxygen management through our Wine Quality Solutions tools,” explains Clayton. “It’s created an opportunity for winemakers to not only understand what’s happening with oxygen during bottling, but when combined with our closures, they can select how much oxygen they want to have going through their closures over time.”

“Our Normacorc Select series was developed specifically with that feature,” Clayton adds.
