Reimagining Vineyards. Revitalizing Revenue. Reconnecting with Community.
For over 40 years, Allen Land Design has helped shape the beauty and function of Northern California’s iconic wine country. We’ve built bocce courts, tasting patios, and elegant garden landscapes. But today, every winery has these—and still, many are struggling.
It’s time for something new.
Introducing: “Beyond the Vines” – A New Vision for Wine Country
We are partnering with forward-thinking wineries ready to transform unused or underperforming vineyard blocks (5–25 acres) into innovative, revenue-generating, and community-driven destinations.
Instead of competing with 5–7 tastings in a day, offer your guests a 2–3 hour immersive experience that blends agriculture, art, technology, food, and connection.
What’s Growing Next? (Hint: It’s not just grapes)
Before the grape boom, Sonoma and Napa counties grew:
• Grains (wheat, barley) – Perfect for microbrews or artisan bread programs
• Orchards (pears, apples, walnuts, prunes) – Hello Cider tastings, orchard picnics, and heirloom jam workshops
• Cut Flowers & Medicinals – Instagrammable rows of lavender, echinacea, sunflowers
• Vegetables – For farm-to-table culinary programs, chef gardens, and seasonal events
These crops can be interplanted with vines or grown in blocks to preserve ag zoning, enrich biodiversity, and create fresh revenue streams - from dried lavender products to orchard dinners under the stars.
The Winery of the Future Is:
• Experiential – Sensory trails, stargazing decks, sunset yoga garden
• Youth-Friendly – Mocktail programs, artist-in-residence studios, co-working gardens
• Tech-Enhanced – AR vineyard maps and wine stories, QR audio tours, vineyard data dashboards
• Locally Rooted – School Lunch Garden Partnerships & Farmworker Meals Fresh food for young minds
• Dedicate a portion of the replanted land (even ½ acre) to grow produce for local school kitchens — think salad greens, root veggies, and fruits that hold well.
• Partner with nearby public schools to create a “Vineyard to Lunch Tray” initiative.
• Offer educational farm visits and garden internships for high schoolers interested in culinary, environmental science, or agriculture.
• Aligns with California’s Universal Free School Meals program and the state’s push for California-grown, climate-smart food.
“This kale salad came from the vineyard down the road.” Now that’s a story parents and kids can get behind.
Feed those who feed us
• Design a simple weekly harvest system (extra greens, orchard fruit, herbs, eggs, etc.) to create prepped or boxed meals for vineyard and local ag workers.
• Partner with local chefs or kitchens for rotating menus: pozole night, tamale kits, farm fresh breakfast packs.
• Incorporate shaded, welcoming spaces on site where workers and their families can gather for community meals or take food home.
This fosters a culture of dignity, respect, and mutual support — and makes your winery not just a business, but a beloved member of the community.
Allen Land Design blends timeless beauty with cutting-edge innovation. We are currently selecting a limited number of wineries to co-create flagship New Frontier Winery landscapes.
Let’s grow something new together.
